30BR accuracy expectations

Closing in on the days until I start shooting my 30BR.

Just out of curiosity what is your accuracy expectation on a 30BR, or rather what would you be happy with? When do you call it good on load development? If you were to shoot a 5x5, what would be an average you'd be happy with? Or an agg as I often see in here.

I don't shoot comps. Just by my lonesome and with friends.

Thanks fellas

Kevin,
My experience with the 30BR is that it will shoot as small as my PPC’s ie: big 1’s small 2’s, but for whatever reason won’t seem to Agg with them.
Don’t know why, maybe just the increased recoil across 10 targets in a day. Also they are a little frisky in a 10 1/2 LB gun! The nice thing about the 30 BR is it’s the easiest accuracy cartridge to load for out there. Kind of set and forget. Oh and the barrels last forever! What’s not to like?
YMMV

I think big ones and small twos identifies my groups as well. The recoil is stiffer with the 30BR than my 6PPC. But, the 30BR is easier to cut a line for score shooting since the bullet leaves a larger diameter hole on paper.

With a good barrel and the right bullet and powder tuned perfectly, expect 5 shot groups in the .1s. Wind flags are necessary to shoot this small consistently and you also must have your gun set up to track properly.

When I started, I could not get the 30br to shoot small using free recoil. There is a definite learning curve there. Bag and rest setup are important along with the distance that you allow the gun to travel. Put the time and work in and you will find that you can shoot free recoil, if necessary, similar to a ppc but with more recoil.

There is nothing not to like about the 30br. Easy to tune and with the right setup, will shoot smaller than most of us can hold.

While I agree with the previous comments on group size and tunability, I have found technique to be equally important. My gun needs to be pinned to hit the mark. Free recoil opens up terribly.
What do you mean by pinned? I was planning on shooting free recoil.

I usually shoot with an inch or two between my shoulder and the butt. So it's not truly free recoil. The butt will hit my shoulder with other firearms.

Pinned implies shoulder contacting the stock with fore end pressing against the rest stop.

Two inches of air space shooting free recoil is too much. You will get better results closing that gap. Try getting behind the gun, allow your shoulder to touch down lightly, then back away a tiny bit to the point where shoulder contact just disappears. All you are really trying to achieve in free recoil is eliminating body contact with the rifle so you don’t inadvertently influence the shot. A large air gap is not required or desired.

Jam those bullets and you will be good to go. Good luck and enjoy!

Sounds good. I will do this. Shoulder on the butt and slighty back off until you no longer feel contact. The way I was doing it was putting my shoulder into a different area code haha.

Yeh, I keep mine at HV weight (13.5lbs) and it’s not bad, gets a little much for me at 10.5.
I agree with Silo1616, free recoil is a non-starter.

I'd surmise that if a rifle does not shoot well in free-recoil, might that point to a balance problem or too much sand in the front rest? If the rifle can track properly, it "should" shoot free recoil. It did take a while for me to get used to the 30BR after shooting PPC for so long. I think it was not letting the scope bumping my safety glasses to become a distraction.

The rifle will shoot free recoil just fine, as pointed out in my post, I just don’t like it smacking me every time I touch the trigger. It also shoots just fine with me touching it lightly with my shoulder.
But then as was pointed out to me years ago when we shot our 30x47’s against the .308 boys, I’m a pussy when it comes to recoil.
I use a 25 lb bag of lead shot when I play with my .416 Hoffman. :)

One of the members here who has passed away Octopus used to wet his targets and sprinkle sugar on top and let them dry. I was at a loss to figure it out till we went to the range and flies would land on the target. He would call the game we were playing for a fly break, he seldom missed. The first one he shot while i was there I called BS and we went cold and there were legs and guts from the fly around the hole. I think if yours shoots as good as his it will minute of fly.
