308win to 6mmBR conversion

I'd like to know if it is possible to convert a 308Win rifle to 6mm Norma BR?,i'm thinking of a Sako TRG21).

Is this possible by changing only the barrel?

Or is there more to it? Like changing the firing pin/boltface because of the change from large to small rifle primer.

thanks for any input,

Sven.

If you dont have a problem with single-loading the rounds, then it's just a matter of having a barrel chambered for it. If you want a repeater, you'd need to have the magazine worked over. I don't know anyone with a repeating 6BR though I guess some of the vermin hunters do it. -Rod-

Thanks for the input guys.
Yesterday I contacted a gunsmith about this and he said that the force of the large rifle firing pin on a small rifle primer from the 6mm Norma BR will pierce the primer and the bolt face will suffer burning. So he advised to modify the firing pin and bolt face as well.
This sounds logical to me, a big firing pin hitting a small primer, so do you guys have any experience with the converting a large rifle primer rifle,308, 30.06 etc.) to 6mm Norma BR?? Without or with the bolt/firing pin conversion??

I have never heard of such. I don't know of any action maker that uses different firing pin diameters to match whether the cartridge has a large or small primer.

I think I would find someone else to do the work, but that is only my opinion.

Thanks guys, for helping to get rid of the disinformation about the firing pin/bolt face.
Do you know any gunsmiths that do Sako TRG conversions?

i have just seen your question feeding may be an issue with 6br if you are going for a repeter. The 6X47 swissmatch as more or less same ballistics and was desinged to over come the feeding problem and would more cost effective the the mag rework as it would just be a plane rebarreling job. as for the primer thing go to some one else for the work you want.

Not to beat a dead horse, but...I shoot a Remington 40XB Rangemaster in 250 Savage. I have reformed about a thousand of Remington's URBR cases, which take a small primer) into 250 Savage. No problem with the firing pin piercing primers.

A number of us have Rem 700s chambered in 6 Dasher, an improved 6BR Lapua. Many of us suffered "blanked" priimers or pierced primers that allowed a small piece of primer material to be blown back into the bolt through the firing pin hole. This was eliminated by bushing the firing pin hole, drilling it to about .060 diameter and turning the firing pin down to suit.
I bushed my bolt and reamed the hole to .0625 and ground the firing pin down to about .061 diameter.
The folks shooting the same cartridge in Custom actions do not have problems because the BAT actions have the smaller firing pin when built. Your Sako may need to be modified or may not need it.

I first posted my question in Januari, meanwhile I decided to buy a complete semi-custom rifle in 6mmBR instead of converting a rifle. Gunmakers with the knowledge to replace a barrel on a precision rifle are hard to find and very expensive here in europe. There is very little rebarreling in continental Europe, people sell the rifle and buy a new one.

A bougth a 6mmBR Keppeler sporting rifle for a reasonable price,2300 euro). You can see it at the website: http://www.keppeler-te.de/ . Keppeler is a small factory in southern Gemany, building rifles in a semi custom way. The founder Dieter Keppeler has left the company now. He worked for some famous German gun factories,Walther, Mauser) as a designer before he founded his own company. He designed the Walther WA2000 semi auto sniper rifle in the eighties for instance, you sometimes see these in movies like in one or two from 007.

Once I've shot my Keppeler properly I'll report my opinion on this rifle here. I only shot it once until now, but the results are very promising, a quarter moa 5 shot group @ 100 meters.
