.308win long range bullets

Austin:

There are a few of us who are trying the 210 Sierra and 210 Bergers at 800,900, and 1000 yards with some success in F-Class.

They have a much better BC and can be kept Supersonic at 1000 with the right powder conbinations. I know Nick Taylor won the F-Class TR using 210s in a 308. his groups were under 4" verticle and 7 inches horizontal

The Palma guys are limited to 155 grain bullets for their .308's, and have found that the various 155's typically shoot quite well at longer ranges. Palma is shot at 800, 900 and 1000 yards, with sight-equipped .308's from prone, no support except a rifle sling. Pretty demanding conditions. Still, the little 155's get all the way to the target, 1000 yards away, usually in fine style.

You can find accurate, match-grade 155's for long-range shooting from Sierra, Nosler, Hornady, and Berger.

A 175 Sierra Matchking is an excellent choice for out to 1000 yards as well, and stabilizes fine in most rifles.

Regards, Guy

John Dink is experimenting with the Sierra 210s pushed by the new NORMA URP powder. So far, so good, even though the launch velocity isn't that fast, around 2650 fps). A quick check with PointBlank software makes me wonder if they'll be going fast enough at 1000 though--the software predicts they'll be down to 1008 fps at 1000.

Know of a guy who did this...

rifle shot a 191-5x @1000yds off a Bi-pod and rear sand sock, at Bodines this year

His load was this....

191-5x came with 44 grns Re15, BR2 Lapua case, and 190 Berger seated to just kiss the lands....used .002 neck tension with redding dies, .336 bushing. Vel. was 2650 ave, low ES.

Chris:

I shot through the chronograph this afternoon shooting Sierra 210s at first then switched to Bergers.

I was shooting batches of LC Match Brass, Winchester Western, and Federal. All with CCI BR2s, and five shot groups begining at 44. grains and ending at 48 grains in .5 grain steps. Begining velocities were in the 2450 fps range and ending velocities were in the 2575-2625 range. Group sizes were all under .5 had some bug holes. The temperature was pretty cool in the 40s. I wonder what the preasure and velocities would have been in the 90s.

My chambers were cut with a 95 palma reamer. The troats were opend up with a .3085, 1.5 degree lead for a 3.127 engagement. I was loading the rounds today at 3.075 COL with a .050 jump.

Most batches had 10fps ES or less. Has some less than 4 fps.

Had one group in the single digits. .07

What powder were you using?

DukeDuke:

I am shooting V V 550. I was expecting to get 2650fps but have not reached that yet. I have shot loads up to 48.5 grains. This is 2 grains hotter than anyone I know of shooting. My pressure signs are within normal range and my. I will up my load to 49. grains next. This will be with Winchester brass as the LC was full with 48.5 grains

These loads far exceed recomended limits. Don't try them in any other gun without first working them up from a lessor load.

DukeDuke:

I would have thought Rl-15 and Varget too fast for the heavy bullet weight. I tried IMR4350 and ran into pressure problems before I could reach needed velocity. Another shooter recomended VV160 but I have not tried it yet.

Keep me posted on your success.

I reached the 2660fps platform with Berger 210s yesterday. I had a less than 10fps ES and a group under .5. I think the lessor load around 2550 was more accurate. I will do more experimenting. I know with a clean barrel I lost 30fps on the first shot, 20 fps on the second shot and was back with in 10fps on the third shot.

I will report on brass strech when I resize. All brass this weekend was Winchester Virgin and sized, trimmed to minimum spec. I really suspect this brass is taking a pounding. The primers are not as flattened as my 300Win Mag.

DUKEDUKE:

You want to go lowend or midrange.

Chrony makes a unit under $100.00.

Dillon sells the CED Millennium for $179.

All:

Some very notable Georgia long range High Masters have been testing various bullets in their 308 Palma guns at 1000. In short, the 185 Berger comes out on top, besting the 210 Berger in accuracy, less vert) while shooting slightly inside the 210 at 1000 in the wind, the velocity gain with the 185 must help). Note that the 155 is Not required in most matches, including Camp Perry, although several western shoots require the 155.

When Charles Bailey was causing all the standards for screamer groups to tighten up in the IBS Heavy Gun class, out of his 165 lb tension-barreled "Blue" gun) while shooting sorted 210 Bergers in his 300 Ackley chambering, he also had great results in testing the 185 Berger and the 187 BIB.

Thank you!

I wonder if the cheap one would give the same reading testing the same loads or I get what I pay for. I should get both set them up side by side and shoot same loads, if the velocity is the same, return the expensive one:D

Down the road when you shoot that chrony right thru the ole brain pan,CPU)... you'll be wishing you'd *kept* the CED. :D

Or when it's extremely cloudy and overcast out, and the weather isn't worth a dang... except for getting some chrono reads if you have the IR skyscreens, only available for the CED) :D

Or when the Shooting Chrony goes BFN and tells you your 175gr SMK loads out of a 26" .308 are going a consistent 3880fps... and the company tells you they'll look at it and tell you whats wrong with it... for half the price of a new unit. Note that that did not count *repairs*.

Guess a) which one I had, and b) which one I have now? :D

To each their own. There certainly are a lot of happy Shooting Chrony owners out there, and for the money they are better than nothing.

I shot the 308 with Berger 210s at Butner last weekend. At 600 yards they shot very well. If the shooter would have settled down the scores would have been right in there.

On Sunday I was interupted while adjusting my scope and lost count of my elevation. It took about 10 shots to get on the paper. The first Match I ran out of time before finishing.

The second Match was going really good and I had a primer failure. When I went to extract my unspent brass the bullet remained in the rifling and the case spilt powder into the action. It locked up my trigger. So I had a DNF. But the bullets I shot were all in the Black between the X and 8 ring before my guns failure. It was very windy and in gust. I was very pleased with the bullet performance. I got to meet Nick Taylor who was not shooting a 308 this match but still a great guy and we share a lot of good information. My squad partner on Day two was shooting 175s in a 308 and they were going subsonic on him.

I will get my gun problems resolved and be back at the next 1000 yard match. The learning curve is getting shorter. I will get there sooner or later.

I do believe that VV 550 is the powder of choice for the heavy bullets in 308.
