.308win shooting FB bullets

Is anyone shooting a .308win using FB bullets. Thinking about a 16 twist shooting either Berger's or Bib's. This will be a hunting/tactical rifle. If anyone is using this setup please tell me if it is limited in range, what type of accuracy you are getting, and any other information that would be helpful.

My Hunter Benchrest rifle has a Hart 1:14 twist barrel. I shoot matches with flat based bullets at 100 and 200 yards. I have used Berger 125 & 135 gr FB's, Hornady 110 gr V-max, and Speer 125 gr TNT's. All have given excellent accuracy in my tight necked 308 rifle with match preped brass. This set up is limited in range and these bullets are all unsuitable for any hunting except varmints. Bibbs are the same if you can get them. A 1:16 twist would be even less suitable for heavier longer bullets. My rifle will stabalize Sierra 150 gr Match Bullets and probably a 150 gr hunting bullet as well. A 1:16, I just don't know, it might but then again why take the chance. You want a rifle to do 2 things and it will involve compramise and will not be optimal for either. A standare 1:12 twist for the 308 will do a much better job of being as versital as you need for one rifle to do the two jobs you plan.

Boltman13, I agree with about wanting a rifle for two things and having to compromise. A buddy of mine is the one wanting to do this build and I told him the same thing, but he asked me to post here and try to get him some feed back. I'm glad you metioned the hunting we have been talking so much about competition I forgot all about the hunting side. I told him to buid it on a 14 twist and shoot some of the lighter weight boattail bullets and I still think that's what he should do. Thanks for the reply and for jogging my memory.

For hunting deer size game the 125 Nosler ballistic tip is a really good bullet. I have an old 308 Win 12" twist that was set up as a hunter class bench rifle that I deer hunt with. It is a tight neck Heart barrel. I tried 150 and 165 gr Sierra and Nos BT but the 125 BT at 3000 fps kills them deader than dead. Drops them in their tracks out to a little over 300 yards which is as far as I have shot a deer with this rifle. I use the 125 BT in my 30X47 HBR 2850 fps and my Contender 14" barrel pistol in 30-30AI 2670 fps and they hammer deer.
