.308 win, reloader 17.Moly 208 amax test results,,,,

Rifle is a savage target action... CBI 1-10 .308 30" ss no taper barrel. Action bedded into factory savage laminated f class stock.

Throat on the CBI is about perfect for the .208 amx....OAL on cartridge is 3.010 with .015 INTO the lands with the MOLY coated 208....
Worked up to 48.7 grs of Reloader 17 In Lapua brass.....lit by OLD (silver) Win WLR.....MV is right at 2715 at the muzzle,,, Brass life is very good as brass was annealed at the 5th firing and now has the 7th cycle on it and primer pockets just startin to loosen very little.....tried BR2 primer velocity about 35 f/sec slower...but acc still very good..... Rifle is shooting 1" 5 shot groups at 300 day in day out...... Tried WW brass ...new stuff in the black and red bag........,,,with wlr...and br2.....wont take the pressure.....primer pockets leaked at 48.4 grs mv @ 2650..... All in all very pleased with this barrel......and whats not to like about a .308...took me 40 years to figure out that there are better cartridges at 1k and beyond...but all in all out to 1200 or so with this Amax and Re 17....think you would be hard pressed to find a whole lot better for my purpose....I got a feelin that the ground hogs here in SW pa are gonna hate it!!!!! If it ever stops raining long enough for the hay to be cut

Good to hear that CBI report as I am impatiently waiting on the very same barrel only in 223Rem for my Savage LRPV.. Did you get it from Northland? What was your wait time for it? They told me 10 to 16 weeks.

Still good to see results on certain cartridges and loads. Never tried RL17 in my 308s. I will now. Don't mind old threads. Can't read them all so when they pop up from time to time, they are welcome IMO.

I'd always say give something a try unless patently wrong or dangerous ..... BUT! When I tried it in 308 shortly after its introduction, I got fantastic velocities from 208 AMaxes and 210gn Bergers, but groups that ranged from so-so to plain bad. What appeared to be hopeful combinations group-wise never delivered on the early promise when follow-up batches were loaded. Others I know who've tried this powder in the cartridge either gave up in the early load development stages like me or dropped it after a match or two. I seem to remember seeing posts to that effect on this forum too.

Nevertheless, good luck. It's certainly worth trying.

Not being a competition shooter and only a hunter with this particular 308, I'll give it a go. In the past RL15 and 185s have been my go too load. Varget with 168s. Thanks.

I've had success with H414 as you can get enough in to make nice velocities. RL17, as Laurie said, didn't produce acceptable accuracy for me in my barrel even though velocities were great. This was all with the 208 gr. A-Max which is a great hunting bullet. JMHO.

For me, all of the Amax bullets have been excellent choice hunting bullets. The Sierra TMKs are as good in my 308. I'll also give the H414 a go. Thanks. John

It'll certainly give 'hunting accuracy' IMHO. The possible other question for this activity is temperature sensitivity if you're likely to encounter large ambient ranges here. Re17 is notoriously temperature sensitive, so I'd suggest working a load up in conditions as near as you can get to those in use in the field.

Yes I have that situation ironed out. I tested it in 20° and 45°. The difference wasn't very prevalent. That would be my temp range of use when hunting.
