308 win. prone rifle, barrel length?

I'm going to rebarrel my 308 and would like thoughts on barrel length. The primary use of this rifle will be Palma. 28" or 30"

30" ..... 1 for velocity and 2 so you have the correct distance between front and rear sights. If this distance is incorrect you will not get true 1/2 or 1/4 MOA adjustments.

Please explain. How a 38" sight radius(+/-), makes a difference such that it should be a determining factor in bbl length.
thanks,

Here is one explanation. Unless you're on a Palma team using a wind coach, clicks are clicks and you can just adapt to what you have. However, if you shoot other rifles you may want the same sight radius for consistency.

However, the bigger factor for me since I shoot iron sights almost exclusively, it is very beneficial to have the proper sight radius to maximize my visual acuity for the front sight. That is why I shoot a 32" finished barrel for long- and mid-range HP and use an 8" bloop tube on my smallbore rifle. This makes everything the same; one vision prescription for all setups. A huge benefit given what I had to manage with previously.

Most rear sights have 40 tpi lead screws. 1/3 turn, 4 clicks, moves the aperture .00833 inch. That's 1/3600th of a 30 inch sight radius which was standardized over a century ago in the USA. As most barrels were 24 inches and with the rear sight on the back end of the receiver, a 30 inch sight radius was normal. 4 clicks on one moved impact 1 inch for every 100 yards of range.

A 36 inch sight radius with a 30 inch barrel means the amount per click will be less; 1/5th MOA per click on most rear sights.

Some sights on Palma rifles move twice as much per click; 2/5th MOA with a 30 inch barrel. this is common in Palma team matches as with aperture sights, that's about the minimum adjustment needed to ensure you'll see bullet impace change relative to where you call the shot. They have 6 detents in their knobs instead of 12.

Beyond all the reasons above, with 155s you will want every last bit of velocity you can obtain at 1000 yards. I run both 30" and 32" barrels successfully, would not want to shorten them any more than 30" strictly to stay supersonic at 1000. If you are committed to shoot only 175 gr. bullets and heavier, 28" would work.
