308 win Powders

I’m looking for a good powder for my 308. I was going to use Varget but it is a little hard to come by. Any help would be much appreciated.

Lots of powders for the .308 some work better than others depending on the grain bullet your going to use. My first two choices are Varget then RL15, but I've also had very good results with IMR3031, 4064, 4895, and W748.

IMR 4895 is my go to powder for the 308. Works great with bullets from 125 through 177 gr. My favorite deer load is Winchester case, CCI BR2 primer, 46 grs IMR 4895 with a 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. It will run right at 3000 fps depending on barrel length. Don't be fooled thinking this bullet is a blow up varmint bullet. It is a medium size game bullet. It kills deer like the hammer of Thor if you keep your impact velocity under 3000 fps. I use it in all of my 30 cal. deer killing weapons. 30-30AI 14" barrel T/C Contender pistol at 2670 fps, 30x47HBR rifle at 2800 fps, 308 Win rifle at 3000 fps.

H4895 has worked very well in my .308 when not using Varget. And like Varget, it's very temperature stable. I also like IMR 4064, but find it somewhat finicky in getting consistent powder throws (those particularly long granules, I guess). But second to H4895, the AR-Comp does really well in my gun.

I have used and had really good results with CFE223 of all things. Things to like are:
- it has a burn rate just slightly slower than Varget, good for the heavy-for-caliber choices
- always "fits" in the case
- it's cheap
- it's available
- it actually does a good job cleaning up (for me anyway)
- it meters out very very well
Things not to like include:
- it's temp sensitive, but not ridiculously so
- it's a bear to clean up the work area
- not a lot of published loads because it is a "223" powder

It's always available and may get you some surprising results. A pound usually goes for $23.00 or less. My recipe in a Ruger RPR:
46.6gr CFE223
Starline brass
CCI BR2
Berger 185 Juggernauts .040 from the lands

As an aside this is THE accuracy powder for my 223AI and 223 77gr Berger OTM loads. Hope this helps.

Capt.Dan's pig load,,40GR. Benchmark with a Hornady 168GR. A-Max.When you have 16 lb. of it sitting on the shelve and it's not moving you find a use for it.But I found
that it works great in my FnFal.

I agree.I had a custom 308 built on the action from my first centerfire rifle. I used a 10 twist Krieger . I was a little disappointed with heavy bullets and varget, and I wound up shooting 155 Bergers for a while. After seeing someones reference to using CFE 223 and 208 AMAXs I tried it. I shot 3 shot groups from Hogdens low to high recommendations , 10 off the lands,in .3 grain increments. My groups went from .1'S at the low end up into the .4 range and back into the .1's just below max. That gun has placed an AMAX between the eye and the ear of many hogs.It does take a little adjusting to get them to work in the clip with my Manners mini chassis.I file the tip back just a bit on the three that I keep in the clip for backups.

What bullets (weights) are you planning to use and what is the barrel length? Is this for competition? Hunting? Plinking?

Any of the powders in the approximate burn rate range outlined in the red boxes on the burn rate chart below could potentially be suitable for .308 Win loads. However, the question of single-base versus double-base (i.e. temperature-sensitivity and energy of the powder), as well as optimizing burn rate for both the bullet weight and barrel length will likely narrow your choices down quite a bit. I would tend toward the faster end of the list for lighter bullets (i.e. 155 to 175 gr versus 185 to 200+ gr), and as barrel length decreased below 24" to 26". A slightly slower-burning powder is generally a bit better with barrel lengths in the 28" to 30" range. After picking a few likely candidates, you can then check to see which might be regularly available.
