.308 Win. Long throat

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas.
I have a new Remington 700 in .308 Win. and it has a long throat. With a round loaded at 2.80 to work in the mag. it makes me have a .210 jump to the lands with 178 HPBT. What do most people do. Just work with it the best you can or just single load one at a time.

And a Merry CHRISTmas to you as well. Assuming you're referring to that 178 gr Hornady? Like all loads, you'll have to play with seating depths, powder, powder charges, etc. I'd recommend loading 5 rounds each of different loads. What powders are you using? 308 Win is a cartridge that's fairly easy to load. My 308s are Rem 700s with the usual long factory throat but they tack drivers. I'm a Sierra bullet guy. I use Varget or IMR 4064 with the 175 SMK loaded to fit the magazine at 2.800 and it's jumping .065. Ido use other bullets too. NOTE: check the appropriate bullet manufacturer reloading manual because they may have already done a lot of homework for you. AND all my Rem 700s prefer mild powder charges, not hot loads. Maybe that will assist you.

I jump them almost .180 and they will shoot, just do a proper load development. And then move to seating depth test move in .003 increments to find the node

I have been searching on the webs and it seams that Remington chambers there 308 with long throats for some reason. I got this rifle for my son to deer hunt. It groups about 1 3/4" with the rounds loaded to fit the mag. With the bullets out .015 off the lands I can get 1/2" group.

I have a couple 308 Remmys. On the lands, I'm 2.963. I single feed my target rounds. They still shoot well with 2.8 loads. I just got done loading 400 plinking rounds with LC brass and IMR 4895. No sorting of brass or bullets. I used 41.3 with a Hornady 168 blemished. Had a good node from 41-41.6. Jumping didn't hurt, too much. When I get real finicky with everything and shoot on the lands, it's a 1/2 in. gun. Here's a target pic, just to give you hope. Center circle on those targets is .9 inches.

Typical of most modern factory rifles, it wold seem to be a liability thing.

I have an old model 70 Winchester. No long freebore at all but back then (pre WWII) the typical 30-06 bullet was in the 150 gr range and handloading wasn't typically done. Have to pay attention to COL with that one to keep from hard jamming handloads with heavier bullets.

With the advent of heavier and longer bullets in conjunction with handloading, a lot of freebore has become the norm.

Don't know if it's true or not but I was told 20 yrs ago Remington throated their 308 for 200 gr round nose bullets using a 1/12 twist barrel. Must be a lawyer thing?

I have several .308 rifles, Savages, Remingtons & a Howa. The one Remington has by far the longest throat yet has the shortest mags and ejection/loading port. Haven't measured the other Remington because it's my action donor for the 6mm-47 Lapua build.

I thought I had a fluke barrel but it's sounding like the norm.
