308 Win. best bullet for 500 yard out 20" barrel

I like the 175 class. They shoot well. Have plenty of speed and are about the same price as the 155 amax I find. Cheaper when I buy the seconds

I load the 178 AMAX with 41.5 gn IMR4064 and maintaining 1/2 moa pecision is solely dependent on my shooting ability and wind conditions out to 700.That is the longest range I have tried shooting this light recoil load. I rarely see the opportunity to shoot that far and designed this load for out to 500 yd killing/tgt shooting from my 20" 1:10 bbl. Sometimes less can be better.

Sums up my experience with 20in barrel too. Also no problem at 1000yd with that load. This is a widely used load!

If you are set on the Amax, I would go with the lighter weights. The 208 comes into its own past 500 yards. If you look at the most accurate factory loads, like Black Hills and Federal Gold Medal, The Sierra 168 is good for anything under 800 yards and the 175 will get you out to 1000. they work the same out of handloads. All around, whichever bullet brand you choose, those middleweights should do fine.

I would go with the 168 Amax if you are only going to shoot 500 yards . I have a sps tactical with a 20" 1&10 twist barrel it loves the 168 Amax it shoots 1/2 sub moa. It actually will shoot 3" groups at 500. 168 Amax 44.0 gr Varget. Works great
