308 vs. 308 palma

I've read every reply three times now, I appreciate all the input, but I don't think this would be the thing for a beginner to try.
Too many other things to learn first.
Thanks again,
Pmoore

Man I'm surprised to be reading what started this thread. I've been using the SR-primered Lapua Palma brass since it became available.

Not ONE mis- or hang-fire in 2 seasons / ~ 1,200 rounds fired. Wolf KVB223REM primers w/ IMR 8208XBR this year (or CCI BR-4's + Varget last year), even made some 6XC out of a box with no problems.

Rarely do I shoot when it's colder than 40F (2011 Palma Fundraiser @ Lodi the exception) so maybe that accounts for something. Too, I de-burr & uniform flash holes on new brass.

I have had mis-fires using LR Wolf primers in Lapua & Win 308 brass but that was in another action, even with a 32# fp spring over the stock (6 yr old) 30#.

I did some of the early testing of the 308 Palma brass, never seen or heard of miss fires when using Varget powder. This brass was made for the USA Palma team who use Varget. I did shoot some frozen loads without any miss fires.

Data from a couple of the many tests I did on the new brass.

July 20, 2009 Sacramento 100 yard chronograph

Varget – Primer -----MV---- ES --- SD --- Comments
47.0 ---- F205M --- 3001 --- 11 --- 04 ---- 5 shots
47.2 ---- F205M --- 2999 --- 23 --- 19 ---- 5 shots --- Frozen load
47.2 ---- F205M --- 3003 --- 08 --- 03 ---- 5 shots --- Frozen load
47.0 ---- CCI-BR -- 3015 --- 16 --- 04 ---- 10 shots
47.0 ---- RemBR -- 3005 --- 15 --- 05 ---- 10 shots
47.2 ---- CCI-BR -- 3035 --- 19 --- 06 ---- 10 shots
47.2 ---- F205M --- 3012 --- 18 --- 06 ---- 10 shots – same as the frozen load
47.2 ---- RemBR -- 3028 --- 14 --- 04 ---- 10 shots

Three different brands of primers --- NOT much differences.
Frozen loads were in the freezer for about 15 hours and in a cooler for the trip to the range.

July 27, 2009 --- Sacramento NBRSA 1000-yard Bench Rest Match

The match is three five shot targets using a “light gun” under 17#s, and three 10 shot targets shot with a “heavy gun” no weight limit. The maximum is a 35 caliber. NO feedback on the shots fired.
I used my Palma test rifle which weights under 16# for both light and heavy guns.

Three different loads were used for the three targets in each class.
“A” load = Old Lapua brass – Fed 210M primers – 07 lot of Varget – Sierra 2156 bullet jumping 0.030”
“B” load = New Lapua brass – Fed 205M primers – 07 lot of Varget – Sierra 2156 bullet jumping 0.030”
“C” load = New Lapua brass – Fed 205M primers – 07 lot of Varget – Berger 155.5 bullet jumping 0.030”

Load A Group average of the 15 shots = 9.284” – Score = 131-01X
Load B Group average of the 15 shots = 9.111” – Score = 135-02X
Load C Group average of the 15 shots = 9.414” – Score = 138=02X

Match Results: LG = light gun, HG = heavy gun. 1000 yard Bench rest targets.

1st place in LG three target group aggregate = 8.084”
3rd place in LG single target score = 47-01X
1st place in HG three target groups aggregate = 10.455”
1st place in HG three target score = 273-03X
1st place in six target group aggregate = 9.269” --- 45 rounds.
1st place in six target score = 404-04X

Conclusions: I cannot tell which load is better - the wind conditions did not allow a fair comparison.
The results are my wind reading which may have improved or hurt some of the groups. Most shots used different wind adjustments. The scope elevation for the three loads were within ¼ minute of each other.

BUT it is FUN to beat 338 Lapua Magnums shooting 300 grain bullets with my Palma gun……………

I have not had any issues with the Palma brass and have purposely shot 100's of rounds in 10-25 degree (Fahrenheit) weather over the last two winters to test this very topic. Which, if you plan on shooting in the winter in Wisconsin this is just how it is whether you like it or not. Generally in January I wait for it to warm up to 10-20 degrees cause below 10 just gets uncomfortable for me to be out in for any length of time.

The only primers I have tested with are 450's and Wolf(KVB556)

No disrespect for the non pertinent posts, I appreciate the experienced shooters reading my post and the information that was posted.

However, when you eliminate what is not pertinent to the question I come up with a 50 -50 response, so I may try it just to see what happens. It is cold in Kansas so a go time to try!

Thanks
