308 troubles

I was having troubles with a new old model 70 i picked up.

No matter what I did I couldn't get this thing to shoot under an inch and a half
Got a bew barrel turned out and now this on my second try.

I think I have it written wrong on my paper.

It's a 168 grain Matchking over 42.5 gr of Reloder15 at 2.785" Winchester wlr primer and starline brass.

This is a 20 shot group.

1.7 inches overall but I'm not scoffing
17 rounds went into a hole about 0.7"

Thought you guys should know your input inspired me.

I hate RL-15 because if shifts Point of Impact from cold to warm barrel. It's a very bad powder when it comes to temp stability.

Try a different powder like IMR-4895, H-4895 (if you have some) or VARGET.
Even IMR-4064 and Win-748 are worth a shot.

Other Powders to consider would be...

Benchmark & 8208xrb (if not shooting farther than 600 yards)
Ramshot TAC
BigGame
Wild Boar
Norma 203 B
Norma 202
IMR-3031
H-335
Accurate 2495, 2520
AR-Comp
Vihtavuori N-133
N-140
N-530
N-540

And then some more.

Bottom line... From my experience, RL-15 is the problem once you shoot 10+ rounds in a row.

Did you have a target picture to show us?

I never did like RL-15 either. So many other better powders to use for the 308. Zero333 has the top ones listed.

Glad you were able to get it to shoot well. We all know how frustrating it can get!

I have never got a handle on Reloader powders..I bought a jar of 17 when there was a shortage of H4350...then told on the forum that it melts barrels... a "mate" tells me that I should ditch Varget and use R15 in the 6BR, despite that it's likely to vanish (Staball Match looks like it will be a useful alternative), as Bofors equips the military...and I just found a pound of R15-5 that I forgot that I bought and I'm not sure what it suits...and the prices are considerably higher than ADI and Winchester. oh and a pound or two of R26 - kept for playing with 6SLR, but not tried yet ...

I have a .308 HS Precision handgun. It shoots fantastic with IMR 4064. Also developed a load with AA2520 that allows my gun to shoot 150 gr. bullets (4064) to the same point of aim as 110 gr. Lehigh Defense Chaos bullets (2520) out to 400 yards. It kills as good as 150 BTs.

I love that Reloader 15. It can be far more accurate than other powders - even taking into consideration other issues...... 41.8 grains with a 168 SMK in my M1-A outdoes all other powders by a good margin in terms of raw accuracy and wide node. Temperature sensitivity is something which can be worked around, and I don't find it to be much worse, if any, than most other powders. I think 17 out of 20 rounds in .7" says he is working on a decent load. I'm sure that if he were shooting 5-shot groups, there would have been some better groups in there..... Hard to work a string that long without wind shifts, etc. I've never used a powder that would cause rounds to just start "popping out" after ten shots. That points to something else.

I was talking with a friend that knows Model 70s. He says one of the things he does to make them more accurate is to make sure the bolt handle doesn’t touch the stock when closed.
Is it bedded?
It seems like it’s shooting well. It might do better.

Why so short? Try 2.82-2.83 should fly mo-betta…

I did have the target, but for some reason the photo I can't get to upload

I have now shot this rifle this load at 700 yards and it seems to shoot through ine hole there as well. I was only shooting at steel, but it seems to be about a 4 inch group for 5 shots at 700 yards.

Absolutely nothing is touching or rubbing ot tight or loose where I don't want it. I bedded it myself and did all of the carving and sanding when the action came back with the new barrel on it.

She's b3dded with the love only I could produce.

I
In my opinion that is not the rifle, that is you.
Would guess that most of you hyper super duper precision guys would vomit if you watched me prepare brass and load 50 rounds.

But, it's what I've got and I'm not complaining about my results. I'm saying thank you to the guys who inspired me and encouraged me to get this new barrel

Can you shot 200 or 300 yards in my years for Target shooting this told me all I needed.

I am with the above Group IMR 4064..........
History back in the late 80's .308. Story was 1 in 10 .308's will shot 4895, all .308's will shot 4064.

Good Luck
