308 running 208 AMAX

did a little testing with 208 amax out of a 1 in 10 twist 5r bartlein 25.25long from recoil lug 308 rem this barrel will shoot 155s and varget at 3000fps t all the time and this same load in a old pss runs 2850fps. This barrel is not throated for 208s but with lupa case 42.5 varget br2 primer at 70 degrees and 1050ft allitude they ran 2550fps and shoot about 1.3 inch 10 shot group at 100yds. The next day tried same bullet and primer but with 46.5 of RL17 dropped through a long funnel and a very compressed charge shot 5 shots av 2600 and 18 spread 4 shot was .450 and 1 flyer at .890 I am going to try this at a 1000 soon i will post results i was impressed with the 208 i wonder how it would do if throated out for 208. also recoil on RL was softer than the varget load just thought i would share this any input would be appreciated THANKS for this great site

If you are shooting .890" 5-shot groups at 100 I doubt you will enjoy what you will get at 1,000 yards.

Do a proper load work up and find the true potential of this bullets before stretching it out to 1,000 yards.

the flyer was probably the shooter ?only 5 shots on paper to date i will update after i shoot 1000 but i still inpressed with the 208 thanks

I'm sure others have done well with this, but 'montana marine' on 24hourcampfire did a lot of testing with the 308 208amax combo with impressive results if you want to search for it. Good luck.

I shot a 308 with 208 A-MAX's (naked) last weekend at 600 yds with very good results. My load with R-17 is 46.0g and I'm jumping the bullet about 25 thousands using Tula primers. Easily a half minute group on a 600 yd FTR target if the wind cooperated. 26" barrel getting 2630 FPS. Score was (I think I remember) 197-6, 197-5, 193-5 (turned the windage knobie thingy the wrong way) :)

FYI, I was fortunate enough to get to shoot with lil Greg yesterday. First let me say it was windy, some gust at-least 20 mph. with his 208 a-max load I wittinessed several 800+ yds hits on ground hog size steel, several consecutive hits at 1025 yds. + exceptional 3 shot group at 600 yds. 208 in a 308 will work

Big Fun in Wind !! Big Greg Smith

208's are magic!!! I shot them with RL17 last winter and got 2,750 with the 208's ;D with no pressure signs. best load test was 3 shots at .50 at 500 yards. I tried duplicating that a few times but couldn't . Then I found out the reason why. My bipod bolt was engraving the barrel from the bottom.

50 grains...wow. Winchester brass is typically light and your COAL is just a bit longer.

Yeah it's a bit compressed at 50 grains... any more than 50 grains and the bullets were 'growing'/unseating themselves. I'm getting 2660 fps out of a 23.75" barrel & 1/2 - 3/4 MOA accuracy out to 1000 yards...

The Winchester brass in 308 is quit a bit more roomy than other brands in my experience.
