.308 primer v, primer v. primer

300 RUM

Gene Nowaczyk
With the lack of primers out there right now I managed to pick some CCI large rifle, large rifle mag and some WIN large rifle standard. No luck with the usual BR2's. How ever I needed primers so now I have something at least. Ok I loaded up 10 each with my standard go to load 45gr H4895, 155 Lapua and shot over the chronograph.

Here are the results:
CCI large rifle mag = SD of 13
CCI large rifle standard = SD 11
WIN large rifle standard = SD 9

I was always hard pressed to get a SD of 9 from the BR2's, I can get usually a SD from 7-11 with them but always seems to change.

Anyway I'm no rookie but not a guru by any means. I would love to hear your thoughts on WIN primers, I like the price, might just have to make it my new primer of choice? Well see how them print the target in the next few days.

I found Winchester primers are pretty good with standard loads. When loads get a little hot primers get pierced. Not a good thing. I went to Wolf primers and never looked back. These primers have given me the lowest SD's and ES and none of them pierced.

Federal 210M's have given me the best consistency over the other primers mentioned. Did not like the Win primers.

Ok I'll consider the WIN as a good back up and a at least I have some thing for now.
I can do a back order from powder valley on tulamo primers which ones are the recommended?

Another Wolf/Tula fan here. Was amazed at the single digit ES/SD's compared even with the BR-2's.

Winchesters for me have been no good. They flatten out on loads that don't even look "warm" when using other primers.

Yes,

I like the Russian primers too. We got them here (UK) for a little while only branded as PMC. They've not been available for around maybe five years - I wish somebody would import them again.

My last lot of BR2s has been very disappointing by comparison - don't know if it was a bad batch or not. If we can get them, most 308W F/TR shooters use F210Ms, but this and every other US made primer is virtually unavailable at the minute in the UK - and prices went through the roof even before Sandy Hook and threats of additional legal restrictions started the alleged US shooter panic buying off

SD and ES are not just determined by primers. If you run the same test over again you will get different numbers with the same ammo. Hence, an SD of 7 or an SD of 9 is a moot point. Neck prep and charge consistency play a larger factor than switching between any A-brand primers.
