.308 load...?

Trying to reproduce the 168 matching HPBT load like federal gold medal... I just bought the Sierra reloading manual also.. Any suggestions useing IMR 4064 and the 168gr HPBT matchking bullets? I have read some guys like 40gr charge they say it's slow but accurate.. I will be useing a 24 inch heavy barrel on a savage 10t that love the factory gold medal rounds but what doesn't compared to standered factory loads..

Iam learning you do get what you pay for in rifle bullets.. Also I don't have a place to shoot over 300 yards so I am not trying for a 800 yard load right now just looking to build some nice quality ammo to shoot paper and play around with.. I picked up a brick of federal gold medal match primers the other day to go with this.

As always , thanks in advance for your time and knowledge...

There's a YouTube video by a guy who sleuthed both the 168 gr. and 175 gr. Federal GMM loads.

4064 and 4895 are the go tos to match fed GMM. Personally; I'd recommend do your own powder charge work up and see what your rifle likes. A good handloader can do better than federal gmm.

I plan to do a a work up but was just wondering what people like with this combo.. Better to be safe than sorry for sure..

I and a friend both shoot the Sierra 168 HPBT Matchking loaded with 42.5 gr of IMR 4064 in Federal cases and Fed 210M primers with very good results--which closely matches the Fed GMM 168 factory load in terms of velocity--but as always working up a specific load for your rifle is recommended--

What has worked well for me is 41.7 grains of IMR-4064 with the 168 grain Sierra M/K bullets. Not a fast load, about 2,575 in a 22" barrel 1/10 twist. I've have had 5-shot sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards with it (unfortunately not every time). To me the IMR4064 seems temperature sensitive. It seems to work in the 60-75 degree range for me. When it got into the upper 80's to mid 90's, groups tend to open up.

Just found more on that load. It was with Lapua brass, Federal match primers, and the C.O.L. was 2.807" which in my rifle gives .025" jump. That probably would be a good starting point to work up a load. I never was very accurate with the factory Federal/Sierra load, decent but not great. Seemed like the PPU match 168g and the Hornady A-Max 168g factory loads worked better. I haven't shot any .308 factory ammo in probably 5 years.

My Shilen barreled .308 (28") loves Varget at 40.6gr. (might adjust a tenth for temp) loaded 168SMKs at .005 jump 2.789coal/2.215to ogive.
Tried 4064 initially but, just grouped better with Varget.
Getting about 2595fps using FF Lapua brass (going on 8th firing) neck sized only with 1.5 thous. neck tension. Annealing every third firing. CCI LR primers currently but, just found some Fed Match LR to give a whirl.
Shoots in the teens at 100 (if I do my part) with the above load.
QL, puts me at a BT node(close) as loaded above and overlaps the Pmax and Z1.
