.308 in a .270

What I know: Older Savage .270 Win. bolt gun, model ??. .308 brass pictured below. I should have the rifle by next week sometime to assess.
What I don't know: Condition of rifle, barrel or action. If bullet is still in barrel. Extent of injuries, if any.

Came way too close to seeing something like that up close and personal. I was working with someone at an event, where the only centerfire guns the person had was a Win 70 featherweight in .270, and a Savage 99 in .308 Win. Had to swap guns fairly often, to let one cool down after a few shots. After a close call of *almost* chambering a .308 in the .270, we implemented a new rule: when the gun leaves the bench, the ammo for it goes with it!

I saw a 308 that had been fired in 264 Win Mag. We had to take the barrel off to get the brass out. He was talking law suit against our shop until we all saw the faint 308 Win on the case head. He and a friend were both shooting a 308 and a 264WM. Took a shell out of his pocket without looking at it.. 98 commercial Mauser. Blew the follower and floor plate out, cracked the stock and set the lugs back.

This is what happens when you put a .300 Savage in a .270. Belgian Browning inherited from his Grandfather. Note the missing round from one box….

Remington 700 muzzle loader. Full charge of BH209 but the bullet was only seated about 6 inches from the muzzle. Not me but I was there.
If you blow the picture up. you'll notice the that the bolt is still closed but the bolt handle blew off and was on the ground. Split the stock from the front to the trigger guard. Luckily no one was hurt.

Don't know about your specific issue without examining the gun, BUT I can tell you for absolute certain a 7 MM Rem Mag fired in a Weatherby 6.5-300 Ti will most assuredly turn a $4000+- rifle into a conversation piece and paper weight. Guy probably had to work hard to close the bolt, but he got it done!
Check for the usual stuff. Set back, knackered lug seats, cracks, stretch marks, etc.

That's not exactly accurate..... I did the first aid on the guy and his face and arms were cut up pretty good. No stitches required but he spread around quite a bit of liquid DNA. Lucky he was wearing glasses......

The photos I posted show 3 open boxes of ammo, all 3 different chambering. That was the primary reason for the mistake. He took a round from the wrong box. I advise anyone I see with multiple boxes of ammo for multiple rifles against doing this as well as show the photos.

I was there. No one was hurt. This happened in Oklahoma. The rifle was donated to the Okla Wildlife Dept for the Hunter Education Program.

Got my hands on the rifle yesterday. I have not spoken with the couple that was shooting the rifle, but did get a few questions answered:

Bullet exited the barrel, did not hit target
Shooter did not know anything untoward happened until the bolt was lifted. No hammer, etc., was required to extract case, AFAIK. Trying to get more on this.
• No visible damage to action or barrel
• Ejector works properly
• Extractor works properly
• Action works smoothly (OK, smoothly for a Savage. I did lube the lugs, cam, etc., and it smoothed up quite a bit).
• Bolt face is etched at primer pocket like one big donut, although it seems pretty smooth. I’m guessing pressure did the deed, not a leaking primer, so that makes sense. 20251020_175730.jpg
• Case head noticeably larger in diameter, measuring indicates it is egg-shaped, as is enlarged primer pocket. 20251020_172503.jpg

Best measurement at .200 line of fired case vs once-fired 270 (not fired in this chamber): 20251020_174325.jpg

Borescope pics later...

Its amazing what you see at the range. Also amazing we don't see more dead people. I hate saying people are stupid but I will say many are just careless and don't pay close enough attention as to what they are doing. The member that blew up this MZ isn't a stupid person but was spending more time talking than paying attention to what he should have been doing. Luckily no one was hurt........this time.

I say that people are stupid nearly every single day. And they are!
