.308 in a .270

Not mine, but another club member who managed to fire a 5.56 in his 7.62x39 AK. Top is fired 7.62, bottom is 5.56.

As noted, it's bad enough when the bullet is smaller than the barrel's groove diameter. The OP's situation is far worse - a .308 bullet in a 270. The followup will be interesting. Hopefully the damage is limited to the gun and didn't include the shooter.

We took the top end of a 308 Win case out of a 270 Win. Case seperated about 1/2" above the case head. Does not appear to be any damage to the rifle.

Came way too close to seeing something like that up close and personal. I was working with someone at an event, where the only centerfire guns the person had was a Win 70 featherweight in .270, and a Savage 99 in .308 Win. Had to swap guns fairly often, to let one cool down after a few shots. After a close call of *almost* chambering a .308 in the .270, we implemented a new rule: when the gun leaves the bench, the ammo for it goes with it!

I saw a 308 that had been fired in 264 Win Mag. We had to take the barrel off to get the brass out. He was talking law suit against our shop until we all saw the faint 308 Win on the case head. He and a friend were both shooting a 308 and a 264WM. Took a shell out of his pocket without looking at it.. 98 commercial Mauser. Blew the follower and floor plate out, cracked the stock and set the lugs back.

If you blow the picture up. you'll notice the that the bolt is still closed but the bolt handle blew off and was on the ground. Split the stock from the front to the trigger guard. Luckily no one was hurt.

Don't know about your specific issue without examining the gun, BUT I can tell you for absolute certain a 7 MM Rem Mag fired in a Weatherby 6.5-300 Ti will most assuredly turn a $4000+- rifle into a conversation piece and paper weight. Guy probably had to work hard to close the bolt, but he got it done!
Check for the usual stuff. Set back, knackered lug seats, cracks, stretch marks, etc.

That's not exactly accurate..... I did the first aid on the guy and his face and arms were cut up pretty good. No stitches required but he spread around quite a bit of liquid DNA. Lucky he was wearing glasses......

The photos I posted show 3 open boxes of ammo, all 3 different chambering. That was the primary reason for the mistake. He took a round from the wrong box. I advise anyone I see with multiple boxes of ammo for multiple rifles against doing this as well as show the photos.

Four 6.5x55 swedes I found at the range, I believe them to have been fired out of a 270 Winchester. So yes, there really are people that stupid.

I was there. No one was hurt.This happened in Oklahoma. The rifle was donated to the Okla Wildlife Dept for the Hunter Education Program.
