308 bullet to use for feral hog hunting

I have a Remington 700 XCR Compact 308 rifle with a 1:12 twist rifling. For target shooting I use Berger 30 cal (.308), 175gr hybrid target bullets that work well. However, I need suggestions to select a bullet for reloading for hog hunting. Any thoughts?
How big are the hogs, and how far away? In most cases a soft load on a 150 grain Hornady RNSP in and around 30-30 velocities on the low side, up side + 150 FPS will work. They're reasonably priced and my sister in law has killed pigs, bear, deer and several other species with a soft loaded 30-06 for 40 years. Accuracy is not varmint or competition grade but if you miss a pig it won't be the bullets fault.

Well...

As others have said, any of the decent cup and core bullets will work well on hogs.

If it were me, I would use whichever of these shot best in my firearm.

I think the whole "you need a lot of bullet" for hogs gets overblown on the internet. Biggest boar I've ever killed was with some 77gr TMKs out of a 18" AR.

I routinely shoot them with 6mm/105 class target bullets at ranges from 300-600 yards, and I've shot them with my FTR rifle and 200.20x/N150 combo.

They die the same every time.

I bet your 175s would work just fine.

Maybe if you ran across some 10 year old 600lb monster boar you'd need something fancy, but I just don't see that it's worth the time/effort/expense to go out of your way for them.

It's kinda like asking "what shoe for killing spiders". Anything will work. Kill em and keep driving. :)

I've killed them with 150 Remington core lok, several types of 22 mag ammo, buckshot from a 12gage pump, and a few with a 23-12 Easton arrow with an 85 grain thunderhead. They are not the tough shrug off all bullets animal that everyone describes. But the biggest number by far Ive killed or seen killed was with a dog and a pocketknife.

If the Berger 175 target bullets work well...than the Berger 175 gr Match Grade VLD Hunting, would also most likely work well ... with very similar BC, may not have to even adjust the scope.
I have no first hand experience and I am the least knowledgeable of people on this forum, but, if you go for a head shot and your target is about the size of a baseball, why not just use the Berger 175 Match? I understand there would be no expansion, but are you relying on expansion for that shot? Just trying to educate myself here. I'll be going hog hunting in a few months myself.

Hornady 150g FLAT BASE, 165g FLAT BASE saw up hogs like cord wood! OP, since you are used to shooting 175g bullets, Hornady 180g BTSP would be first on my list.

Dad cooked and I butchered the hogs for a large group of hunters in S. Texas, we got to hunt for free. Those Hornady's really saw up a hog.

Remember that a hog's anatomy is not like a deer's anatomy....

you gonna eat em? you need to retrieve em? or just want em to die??

pretty much any expanding 308 bullet will do. Ive shot them withFMJ's, subsonic cast lead in pistol and 45/70's, even 22 lr. Only time Ive ever had a problem was last fall. We had three in our pen trap, one had "russian boar" genes in that it had a long snout , ridgeback, very aggressive. All I had was a 38spl. The two feral hogs went down with one or two shots to the body. The russian, 5 shots with fiocchi Hp still going, all hits in the head and body. reloaded with 158gr cast, one shot down.
I didnt do an autopsy as they were big males so they would taste nasty but there were no exit holes. but 6 hits in the hog.

A agree with the consensus regarding bullet selection for a .308 - it doesn’t matter much. I say shoot cheap bullets so you can feel less guilt spending $4k + on a thermal and suppressor. Most shots I take are 25-75 yards. No need for an expensive VLD.

There are 2 different bullets here, one target, One hunting with a thinner jacket that will expand from the same manufacturer with almost the same BC so why not shoot the hunting bullet designed for expansion, if it shoots as well as the target bullets both made by Berger...one says target on the box the other says hunting on the box.... your choice. I'd choose the hunting box, for hunting, they are usually accurate and designed for..hunting.

I agree that anything will do in a 308W. My son has taken more than a dozen with his Glock 22 (40 S&W) with 165 gr FMJ. They are a problem for the ranchers where he hunts. His has been instructed to kill all he can. He has taken hogs over 300 pounds but put multiple shots in the big ones. I have no idea how many he has taken with his 308W. It is a lot. I load 150 gr Nosler AccuBond or BallisticTips for his 308W sporter. They work as well on whitetails as they do the hogs. When he was younger we used the 125 gr Nosler BT with reduced loads and they worked fine with the few pigs shot. Luck, Tim
