308 brass to 6br?

Can someone change 308 brass to 6br brass? Is it hard and what does one need to do so?

Wow that would be ALOT of work!!!! Not worth the time in my book. I wonder about the success rate of necking and cutting the Case almost in half since the 6BR is soooo much shorter than the 308 and then tring to create a shoulder from what would essentially be a straight case and turn it into a new Bottle neck cartridge. The Case wall so of the 308 are thicker than the 6BR also so there is that problem., I just cut a 308, 243, and 6BR in half to see the dif.)

Not saying it cant be done with the right progressive dies and work. But why??? Like putting out a house fire with buckets of water when there is a firehose 20 feet away.

Just my two cents and worth about as much as the letters you are reading.

your right. I had just seen a die on midway that did this, but it cost a crazy amount of money. it was like 450 bucks for this die. I just have some 308 cases around thought i would ask. thanks for the info. Ill just keep them for a 260 build. that should be much easier to neck down.

I cut off the shoulder of a unfired blank and then lubed the casing with way more than you should. I then started working the brass about .5 inch of arm swing at a time before lifting the handle and re-lubing the brass. It took a long time and there are wrinkles in the neck. The neck is also very thick.

Starting in 1978, Remington made special thinwall .308 brass that could be used to form .22 BR, 6mm BR and 7mm BR. Other than that, it is simply not worth the time. Lapua is just too good and lasts too long to bother.

I have a set of forming dies that form them to 7mmBR then from there go to 6mm...I have not worked with them yet but I purchased 500 6mmBR cases when prices were cheaper..I shot 22 and 6mm br

WHY would anyone want to do this?

If for no other reason than the small rifle primer for such a reduced-case volume?

Cases with the same head diameter may have dramatically different case web thicknesses, which would seriously alter respective case volumes & pressures.

Two issues come to mind:

The 6mmBRX creates lots of preasure small primers handle preasure better than large primers.

Lapua 6mm BR brass is so much better than any American brass.

Why make an easy job hard?

Lapua 6BR is the only choice, in my opinion.

I fell for the money saving idea of doing the thing you mentioned. The regular brass WW, And R&P most of which would show wrinkling some bad some worse. Yes lapua brass was the most workable, but that is looking at puting the horse before the cart. Take my advise penny wise penny foolish like me. Don't even think of it. Take my advise buy quality brass, shoot the H^%$# out of it throw it away and buy more. My 2 cents. Lou
