Lapua 6BR brass in pasteboard box vs blue plastic box?

There is no difference in material. The difference in the degree of shine on the cases is that anything in a cardboard box has been sitting on the shelf, exposed to who knows what vapors, humidity, etc., for at least ten years.

It's brass. It tarnishes.

There was and is a difference in neck thickness on average of .0005 minimum between the old gold box and the current blue box. Therefore, the Dasher's, BRX, BRDX have thicker case walls with the old gold box brass.

Fred's results were independently done, that came after the fact, to what many suspected back then. It was obvious to me that something besides the box and neck thickness had changed. Fred's results confirmed it.

Just looking at the two with my MKII Eyeballs, if I had to guess, I would say they were totally different at least as to the annealing and final polish/tumble.

If the alloy was not changed then there must be varying levels of annealing with-in case lots. Too many users are getting different results among the whole spectrum of cartridges offered.

"Heavily annealed" is a good sign. You MUST anneal after any significant modification of shoulder or neck. Tumbling to make it look pretty basically negates the annealing of the case mouth. You should be happy.
If you want pretty brass, I recommend hand polishing with IOSSO "bio" paste.
Tumbling to make it look pretty basically negates the annealing of the case mouth? I've never heard that.

Actually, it's the other way around. There was a slight reduction in neck wall thickness (of a bit less than .0005" total) that occurred at roughly the same time we changed from the cardboard to the newer plastic boxes. This change was mandated by CIP, due to the fact that we also load 6mm BR ammunition. naturally, this ammo is loaded with our standard 6mm BR brass, straight from the same production lines. Loaded ammunition must pass a series of gaging, including a ring gage for maximum neck dimension. We had some that was borderline (too large to pass the ring gage). As a result, we had (as in, were legally required to by CIP; unlike SAAMI, CIP isn't voluntary and has force of law behind them) to reduce the neck diameters to the point where they would pass that same ring gage 100% of the time. To that end, we reduced the diameter of the loaded necks by slightly less than .0005". This was roughly the same time that we changed the packaging, leading to the whole Gold box/Blue box kerfuffle. The change was made "roughly" in that time frame, and you will find the older Gold boxes with the "new" and "old" brass in them, as you may find some in the blue boxes as well. It just depends on what packaging they had on hand for that lot, and what was running out of stock; a typical production changeover.

Difference ??? Neck... some blue box lots were sub .011 thick, length Has changed by .010 shorter in blue box and the loss rate in blue box fire forming in some lots I found to be 90% unless you anneal them first. now with a ownership change they may change again....... jim

Jim,
Long time no talk to!...... my findings were similar..... I think annealing before and after is important.
