308 Brass not fitting into shell holder

There is nothing like reinventing the wheel. I have shell holders with grooves, before the Internet there was a reason for not having a groove, and now? We have reloaders reinventing the wheel.

Guffey....might just be me but you seem a bit angry with all your snide remarks. Get on that new fangled thIng called the Internet and look at some cute puppy pictures to make yourself feel warm and fuzzy or they have Midol at your local pharmacy. I can only guess that you have years and years of very valuable knowledge that everyone here would love to get your imput on. No disrespect intended, I just like to call it as I see it.

Egg, you should get a lot of likes on that one. And then there are those that feel threatened. In the big inning of the Internet reloaders were claiming the shell holder and die manufacturer had to match. I should not have to remind you but reloaders in the beginning of the Internet never measured the deck height of the shell holder and then one of them decided he invented the term 'deck height'.

Paper does not last as long as plastic but at the time I had a paper box packed by C&H of El Monte, California; they printed the instructions of the bottom of the box identified as a counter display. The instructions on the bottom of their box claimed the dies in the box were designed to be used with a shell holder with a height of .125". From the big inning reloaders were grinding the bottom of the die and or top of the shell holder when they did not understand what was going on. I have always suggested grinding the shell holder and or die was never necessary.

Anything that can be accomplished by grinding can be accomplished with the feeler gage and you have no ideal how angry that made reloaders, all of them. I did have one moderator remove my post claiming he did not want my advise getting someone killed. In about 6 months he did a cut and paste of my response and claimed it as his ideal. And he finished with, "No biggie".

And now someone is claiming he cut a groove in a shell holder and you did not ask him what shell holder? You did not say "some do and some don't, Why?"

We ain't got no time for all this bickering, we need to be getting in RCBS face, all of us that bought reloading kits that were incomplete. Mine didn't include a gasket hammer am I am going to get RCBS to send me one. How can I reload with out it???

Shop skills: I have hammers, for me it is not necessary to hit anything harder, all that is required is a bigger hammer. One of the smallest hammers is the gasket cutting ball peen hammer. I understand there are lofty terms to describe methods and techniques for sizing belted cases.

Back to having been asked to help a builder form cases for a (at the time) wildcat chamber. He had close to 500 belted cases , some of the cases would not fit the #4 RCBS shell holder. I knew before I boxed up my tools the cases that would not fit the #4 shell holder had upset case heads from heavy loads. So I used the small hammer to drive the cases into the shell holder. Between us we have 7 lathes, 4 have collets meaning reducing the diameter of the case in front of the belt is no problem but! No one measures before and again after, the extractor groove had expanded with the heavy loads, what this means even if he had got the case to fit the shell holder he could not size the case in front of the belt. I know, there are lofty terms to describe the difficulty of sizing belted cases, the cases that could not fit the shell holder had expanded .017" in front of the belt and .014" at the extractor groove. I suggested he not use the upset cases, after he understood why the cases would not fit the shell holder we formed 400 cases.

And yes; had he been able to form the cases without me that is what he would have done.

And? He called me again, seems one of his new proud owners was an Internet reloader. The new owner was complaining about loose necks. I asked about accuracy, the builder said the new owner did not believe he could shoot that accurately. Anyhow I went to his shop and we dug through barrels, boxes, tubs etc. of cases. I fixed the problem knowing improving accuracy was not going to happen.

If you need a hammer to reload ANY cases, you have the wrong equipment and don't know what you are doing. I thought you would get it with my sarcastic post but maybe not. A HAMMER IS NOT REQUIRED TO RELOAD AMMO. If you need hammer you are a danger to yourself, if you post it you are a danger to others. If the shell doesn't fit the holder it is out of specifications or the case is out of specifications. There is no other answer. Yes I do know some brass does not work in all shell holders, the manufacturers have made the proper shell holders, as with 338 Lapua and others.

If you need a hammer to reload ANY cases,

There is a limit as to how slow I am allowed to post, again, have a very small lathe that has chucks on both ends, traveling with it is a matter of carrying it under my arm, problem: If I carried it to another shop everyone would want one. There is no shell holder that will fit the upset case heads, SO? I use a case friendly hammer.

And I have said nothing about what I think but if I did I would suggest you not drink and if you do not drink, don't start because I believe you are silly enough sober.

There is an old saying I am now convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, was created by someone that knew/knows F. Guffey. I believe it goes something like:

"I've been wrong one time in my life. It was when I thought I was wrong but actually ended up being right!" o_O

I just wish you'd bestow some of this knowledge upon us instead of just telling us that you can do it. if a guy wanted you to bring that lathe under your arm and your hammer to fix a problem who would they call anyway? youre the smartest reloader you know so maybe someday you'll teach us something.. anything.

Yea......that's it, thanks for helping me out :) Now I know for certain Schulz knew F. Guffey. Schulz was born in 1922. Guffey was an experienced reloader by that time (the ONLY one I think he so often refers to himself as in so many instances) according to most his stories.
