308 Brass not fitting into shell holder

A "proud" primer after firing

A protruding primer after firing has nothing to do with the shell holder. I understand reduce loads is a cute way to reload but it defeats the design. A protruding primer after firing has to do with the failure of the case head making contract with the bolt face when the case stretches between the case head and case body. I am the fan of cutting down on all that case travel.

Lee shell holders and shell holders that do not have a groove: I am beginning to think members of this forum believe the manufacturer forgot to cut the groove. I have shell holders that do not have groves, the manufacturer of my shell holders did not put a groove in 'ALL OF THEN' to protect me from myself.

No.

Sorry to opine here among the experts but that is not correct. The grooved holder on the right is the Lee Holder. The middle one looks like . .. uh....it needs to be cleaned.

Here are three Lee holders from their little Lee plastic boxes. The older ones came in round plastic cylinders.

Mine all have a groove . they are bout 18 years old now.
Had a problem with nosler 260 brass bout month ago being real sticky, changed shell holder as advised by other forum members.
Problem solved!!!

I have shell holders that do not have groves, the manufacturer of my shell holders did not put a groove in all of them to protect me from myself.

Note to self:
- Shell-holders that do not have primer grooves, are made to protect fguffey.

Here I always thought it wasn't necessary for all to be grooved.
Amazing how all the mfg's know fguffey and do this just for him. He is truly the only one.

I have shell holders that have grooves and I have them without grooves. my favorite shell holders have knurls and no grooves with a .125 deck height. and then there are those pesky shell holders with different numbers on them. they protect me from myself because thebigger ones will push a shell in but the die keeps them. again, the no groove shellholder lets you know how proud your primer is. I dont have this problem.:p:cool:

Dusty, are you the only one with knowledge of these shell holders? Seems to me like if you knew about these, routinely talked about them, but never really explained yourself it could lead to a lot of folks blocking you. :D

Before you block me you should read around more and see that its a joke. I was quoting someone else

I have some priv part 7-08 brass when new unfired while priming with both the lee and rcbs hand priming tool a few will not go into the shell holder without a lot of force

Ok a final quote to end my original thread. RCBS has graciously sent me a new shell holder, not branded with number and ALL my 308 shells now fit easily.
The folk at RCBS are tops in my book for looking after their customers. :-)

That is brilliant but if the case fit the shell holder in the big inning something had to happen between loading the case and the bullet leaving the barrel. F. Guffey

You are kidding? MY shell holders have a deck height of .125", when I raise the ram the die contacts the top of the shell holder if I am returning a case to minimum length, if I choose to size a case to fit a go-gage length chamber I have to know the difference between minimum length and go gage length and then there is no go-gage length and field reject length. I can only guess that is the reason it is difficult being me. I am the only one that can do all 4 lengths with a field reject length gage.

Other reloader have too many excuses for not being able to 'do it'. F. Guffey

The Astros just had a big inning and they hits some balls on the barrel but none went out because their deck height is a lot more than 0.125”. I think they have a field gauge because there’s a sign on the fence that says 325’, but in another place it’s 408’ which I think is usually the no-go gauge if you hit it that way. I don’t think any of those are field reject length because they are still playing and everybody is acting like the game is gonna count and all.
