308 Baer

Just picked up a 308 baer heavy gun with a .330 neck. My question is can I use a 300 weatherby bushing neck die to size my necks? I have a 308 baer die set with seater and fl die but the fl die was not made for a tight neck chamber and doesnt size the necks down. I know the baer has some case taper blown out but is it so much that I can't use a weatherby die?

Bruce Baer developed this cartridge and is listed in the top gunsmiths section on the main page. He is a real good guy to talk to and I'm sure he could answer your question and then some.

I don't know the answer myself and asking Bruce would be the way to go. My thinking though is along the same lines as yours 80z. Seems like any 30 caliber neck sizing die that only sizes necks and nothing else should work. If this wouldn't work, I'd like to know why not. I'm a firm believer in "You don't know what you don't know."

Camaro--I use the 300 Wby Lee Collet Die to size my necks for my 308 Baers and the Custom Redding FL Bushing die to push shoulders and size the 308 Baer Cases (already formed). You will have to have the proper mandrel for the collet die for your neck turned cases. You didn't state if your FL die is a bushing die, if your cases you are sizing are 300 (or 340 Wby) or already fireformed and neck turned 308 Baer cases. Short answer to your question w/o knowing all the particulars would probably be yes, IF the necks are turned to proper thickness and you have the proper size bushing for your neck die.

Camaro--When I size and push shoulders in my 308 Baer cases in the FL Redding Bushing, I don't use any bushing. The Lee collet die sizes the neck only.
I hope that clears things up for you.

The brass is 340 wby already neck turned and fire formed. The dies I have are rcbs custom dies fl and a seater but the fl die is for a standard no turn neck. So I can bump the shoulders and all I just need to size the necks and was wondering if a 300wby bushing neck die would work.

Thanks for the info Dan I believe you have answered my question. Im just going to order a redding bushing neck die and 324, 325 and 326 bushings.

Camaro--If you take the expander out of your FL die would it be too tight (provided it is a die w/ exp)? Is your FL die a bushing die or a regular die w/o bushing? Bruce Baer will sell you the proper bushing die (then you can push shoulders and size) and you can but over the counter Lee collet die for the 300 Wby which works fine for sizing the neck (w/ proper mandrel). Bruce also has the Wilson seating dies. Some size the necks w/ Bruce's FL die w/ bushing and some of us size the necks w/ the Lee Collet die.
I hope you got all the info you need.

The die is a regular fl no bushing. With or without the expander plug it makes no difference it does not size the necks and the plug is undersized. If I pull the decapping rod and look down thru the die you can see there is a cpl thou gap between the necks and the die.

Camaro--Your FL die was probably used to push the shoulder, decap and size the case w/o touching the neck. You just need something to size neck. The 308 Baer is a great case, it has about 11% more capacity than the 300 Wby. Using 340 Wby brass to neck down will give you a great clean up on the neck turn especially if your neck (chamber) is .336" or less.
