308 ACK

Tried this last year:

Even in a short barrel it is worth trying it.

So you just ran a 7mm-08 reamer a little deeper in a 308 win chamber. How do you know if you have proper headspace? What kind of gains did you see over the standard 308 win? I am building a rifle on a m48 yugo mauser and can't decide what to build. The bolt length and bolt face give me fairly limited options.

thanks for your response

Here's the result:

Headspace is a no brainer: Just neck up a .308 case to .338 or .358 then resize the case in your .308 die you'll unscrewe several turns (.25" from the shell holderis a good start) and make your own case with the desired neck length. Congratulations, you just made your own GO gauge too, make 2 or 3 of them just in case and start reaming your chamber. With hindsight I would use a .260Rem or a .243 Win reamer instead of a 7-08 reamer because the neck portion might ruin an otherwise perfect throat on a match chambering.
You'll gain about 2.5 grains of water with Lapua brass, a little more with Win brass, this will translate with a gain of about 90 fps at the same pressure if you use Vihta N540 with a 155 grainer in an 18" barrel. Short barrels are not generous...
Hope this will help...

The good news with this wildcat is that you use the same dies and you shouln't have the feeding troubles of steep shoulder angles plus you got about the same capacity gains as the AI.
The only bad news is the purchase of a .338 Fed or .358 win die, but Lee's are cheap and they got a neat tapered expander.

There should be no problem to fireform any .308 case provided the chambering is made with the proper gages.

Thanks. I´m going to put this on the to-do list.
