.308 1/9 twist rate. Has anybody played around with one? If you have, how did you like the results?

I had one chambered in a .308 Norma Mag. Didn't like it much. Could have been a bad barrel but couldn't get a good load after 700 rounds and said the hell with it. Put on a 10 twist, and chambered it for .300 Dakota. Found I great load in 40 rounds and sold it.

I have a 1 in 8 on a stubby 16"....... pushes 178s at 2650fps (surprised me) and just shoots great.
Unless you have intentions of using an extremely heavy bullet or need to shoot subsonic it probably does not make sense to go extra fast twist but hasn't hurt me.

IMHO, the distance you intend to shoot may dictate the bullet weight you intend to use PLUS the barrel twist. For years, I've had a .308 that I have used for 100 - 200 yds Target shooting that has had two 1:10 HV barrels. Though I've used both commercial made rounds and handloads, I've had the most success (and tightest 5 shot groups @100 yds) with 168 gr HPBT bullets. I suspect that the 1:9 barrel is capable of producing very decent results, provided you test and find the best combination of bullets, powder and seating depth. The powders I have found that work best are Varget, RE15 and IMR4895. Just my .02 worth.

Why reinvent the wheel? 10 twist shoots just about every 30 cal bullet made. The faster the twist the higher the pressure and the slower the barrel will be. At least in theory.

Think about a gumball rolling down one of those spiral tracked gumball machines at the front of your local Walmart. The steeper the track and less spirals the ball makes the faster it goes. And the less pressure needed to get to whatever velocity

Probably not the best example but I'm a public school kid.

Many who are much smarter than I recommend using the slowest twist possible that will stabilize the bullet that you intend to use. 1-10 will cover pretty much all the bases in 30 cal.

I used a 9.25 twist to shoot 215s in FTR and it worked pretty well......Several of the guys shooting 215s are using 9 twist for FTR.

Anything lighter/shorter (210 gr or less) doesn't need a twist that fast from what i've seen.

well, here is some food for thought. don't know if you read the article about shooting rock chucks at 1.78 miles out in Pueblo Colorado in the book "precision shooting at 1000 yards." they were using a .308 Winchester (Ackley), but were shooting an 8" twist barrel finished at 28" IIRC. I want to say they were pushing 220 SMK at roughly 2450 fps (kind of slow, but they said it was accurate).

Go with the 1-10 and be able to shoot any bullet you want and not saying later, wish I had done it different. Had a 1-9 on one of my L.G.'s it was alright but wouldn't out shoot my 1-10 twist.
