fastest twist rate for 180gr hybrids

just wondering what the fastest twist rate is that will not over-stabilize the 180gr hybrid.

I know 1:9 twist is the norm.

And...how about gain twists...say a 1:9 gain to say 1:8.25?

I don't know about "gain twists">>too new for this old head! However, I am starting to be convinced that a 1-8.5 is the way to go with a 180gr projectile. I just bought a new barrel in 1-8.5 and will have it installed in about a month or so. At my behest, a friend of mine just had one installed and he just finished developing a load for it. He states (and I believe him) that the 8.5 twist is CONSIDERABLY more accurate at 1000 than any of his 3 other 9 twists! However, as you are aware, opinions are open to debate.

I personally would think an 8.5 would work well too, never tried it, but I could see it working good.

As far as the gain twist type barrels, Ive done some reading on them, not sure where, just remember moral to the story was no one could tell a difference compared to a regular barrel in all the testing from that article. Right now I think its just another thing to tinker with and see what happens, but nothing has prooven them better in any way that I have seen yet. If the info was out that they were better you would see the whole hord here flocking to em like chickens as feeding time. My opinion of stuff usually is if its prooven to out compete you would see everying going to it and all kind of talk about it, but thats not the case... goes for everything.. if somethings good you will see lots of us talking about it on here regularly...

I run a 1-8.5 Bartlein on 1 shehane and a 1-9 Brux on the other, I don't notice any difference in accuracy but I do notice that the 1-8.5 has a little more rotational torque in the rest. I run 180 lapua's and vld's in both.

8.5 depending on what 7mm and the speed I am shooting I may go for an 8 and in some cases get away with the 9 but if you buy an 8.5 twist your pretty safe regardless
