3031 powder for 6-284?

Purchased a used 40X in 6-284 10" twist (along with new brass and a Neil Jones microseating die). One of the supplied targets shows a 0.4" 100yd group with a "68 grain match bullet atop 35.5 grains of 3031". I cannot find load data for this cartridge using 3031. Replicating these good groups is tempting. Previous owner was serious target shooter but I have no way to contact him now. I also got some reloads from him with 105 gr Bullets that shoot 1" at best over H4831. The tighter twist makes more sense for the lighter 6mm bullets, so the 68 gr results are consistent with theory.
My Question is if anyone has experience with imr3031 powder in the 6-284...most of you 6-284 owners report success with slower powders, even with light bullets...

Well, its not the 6-284 but I have had excellent luck with 3031 under 87 gr and lighter 1-10 twist in the 243. The only reason I even tried it is because I read where a well known bullet maker said " if a 243 won't shoot with 3031 it won't shoot".

35.5 gr of IMR-3031 would be a VERY mild load with 68 grainers.

According to Quickload, around 47 gr of IMR-3031 is about the MAX with 68's.

I’m wondering if this rifle was a smaller 6mm in a former life, and he had the bbl set back and rechambered to 6-284. Thr bbl is only 22”. The target I have only says “6mm” with the guns serial # on it. Isn’t that a weird bbl length for the 6-284?

Here are a couple of thoughts:

The original chamber, in a longer barrel was maybe something along the lines of a 6mm International.

The existing twist rate is incompatible with 105 grain VLD bullets and H4831 since the bullet requires a slightly faster twist for stability unless the throat was extended in the original barrel.

There can't be any absolute determination of anything from the information given unless the original owner can corroborate.

The 6-284's I shoot are with longer barrels and faster twist rates to stabilize the longer VLD bullets whether for hunting or targets. However, seating some 87 grain Hornady VMAX over a suitable load of Ramshot Magnum would give you an excellent varmint rifle.

Regards.
