302 Whisper

I ran across this article and it mentions a 7.62x38 or 302 Whisper. Is this just another name for the 30br or is this a modified version for suppressed rifles? Just Curious. http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/silcart.html

A few months ago I started looking for info on the 302 Whisper.

I made the mistake of contacting JD Jones himself.

The thread is here. http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/6mmbr/vpost?id=2507020

It does appear to be a long throated 30BR. All that I am good with as in I have a reamer and a throating reamer. All I wanted to purchase from JD was some info and/or data. After hanging up the phone I figure I will go with a 300 Fireball aka 30/221 aka 300 Whisper.

I really liked the 302 Whisper idea of loading the 220 and 240s subsonic and being able to push the light bullets plenty fast.

Some data is here. http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27

I have a 300 Whisper in a contender barrel. You could probably load some heavies up with a small charge of trail boss for subsonic flight for a rifle length barrel. I don't have my load info available at the moment but i think 180 grain sst's with 4 grains of trail boss worked in my 14 inch barrel. Awesome caliber i.m.h.o. How did JDJ inc treat you?

The woman I spoke with was very polite and very helpfull. When JD got on the phone it went downhill from there. I was not looking for free info and I told him that twice, two different ways. I realize he spent his $$$ on R&D and was more than willing to pay him.

I will never again spend another dime with JDJ or on any of his products. That is how he treated me.

I am glad that I am not the only one that feels that way about JDJ. He showed me about as much respect as you would a cow pie in the field when I tried to talk to him about his 6mm-225 Winchester wild cat.

I have never spoken to JDJ, but I have gotten the same type of treatment from some of the other "respected" custom builders and manufacturers. Maybe cynicism sets in after a while, or they start believing they really are "all that".

Yup, that's JD. He has a hard won reputation for being that way with just about everyone. Somehow or other he thinks he is the first one to ever come up with anything.

I remember a guy who wanted an XP-100 chambered for a 300 Whisper. JD would not touch it unless he sent a very special trigger in with it and the guy was not about to let someone mess with it. Somehow or other JD brought up that the guy would need dies and then went nuts when the guy said that he did not need them as he already had some. I seem to recall the story involving threats of "my lawyer is going to call you!".

Anyway, he hung up on JD, had a reamer made, very carefully marked 300 x 221) and ended up chambering barrels for several people.

There really is nothing terribly new about what Jones offers other than his customers do not have to do any work themselves. The 30 BR chambering reamer plus the throater will allow you to set things up the way that you want. The only "trick" is to determine the barrel twist for the weight bullet you want to use.

8 twist barrels have generally worked with all but the very heaviest of bullets.
