300wsm Berger bullet for deer

I have a 300wsm and I'm trying to decide if I should use a Berger 155gr match grade VLD hunting bullet or a Berger 168gr match grade VLD hunting bullet.
I would appreciate any advice. Thanks,

Range is from 50yds to 200yds.

Just my opinion, but for a max range of 200 yards, I would look towards "other" bullets.

A 300WSM with a berger, at 50 yards, is going to make a mess.

165 Nosler Accubond or partition comes to mind.

I used the 155 VLD in my 30X47 at a muzzle velocity of 2650 fps and shot a deer broadside at 111 yards thorough the shoulders. It blew an exit hole through the hide that was baseball size. The whole front end of the deer was destroyed.

Anyway you look at it is probably overkill. Not knockin' it as I've been there, done that. Answer is either will perform admirably but you may consider shot placement in regards to meat loss. Hope this helps, ;)

I like those Berger bullets and have loaded the 155 VLD Hunting in the 30-06, 308 and 300 Win Mag.

I shot one deer at 280 yds and I waited until it turned as a raking shot might not have penetrated enough.

Broadside above the heart was impressive. The buck staggered and fell. There was no 'meat' loss. Not that I care about "meat loss".

I do care however that the deer fall quick and die quick. The Berger pleased me.

Find the best price that you can on 180gr Hornady Spire Points or 180gr Gamekings. They will kill any deer you will ever encounter within those distances and not turn them inside out. The trajectory within that distance will be "prairie dog capable".

Why shoot a lightweight, lightly constructed bullet, at warp drive velocities, unless you intend to evaporate whatever you shoot?

The use of 180 gr cup and core bullets like the Sierra has resulted in a buck running all over the place after a solid well placed broadside shot from an 30-06 at 50 yds!

In my experience the 150 and 155 gr bullets do more damage however they won't penetrate as far on a raking shot which I would pass up.

I take it you're talking from hearsay or guesstimation on bullet design and not personal experience?

Bergers work perfect at any range. Lot of good bullets out there, but either one of those Berger weight choices will be deadly medicine for deer. If it were me though, I would say bigger is always better. The 168gr would give you better long range ability and would be plenty if you ever decided to go elk, moose, or big bear hunting.
