bullet choice??

Finishing up the bench gun for the year. have to decide on bullet have it down to two and having a hard time settling on one.
190 hunting VLD
215 hunting VLD
shooting a 300WSM and both bullets will shoot equally well and at 1000 they are very similar in wind bucking ability it seems. I am thinking stay with the 215's but the 190's did really well in the other gun last year. anyone have an opinion???

If I might inquire (and not trying to be cute) but when you use the word "bench gun," are you going to use this newly built baby for something else other than Benchrest Shooting? If not, why use "hunting" bullets and not target bullets? Just curious. My experiences (not in 300wsm) have shown the "target" bullets, regardless of weight have out performed the "hunting" bullets when shooting paper. Obviosuly the same is not true when hunting is the purpose. Thx

My good friend shoots a custom BAT in 300WSM and we tried a few different bullets in it and surprisingly the 190 hunting VLD's out shot everything from the 215 hybrids to the 185 hybrids and the 190 VLD targets. Thats why I tried them. This gun seems to like the equally well.

Thx for the update and info. Now I better understand your situation, especially given you are talkin 1K shots. My comments were directed more to 100 - 200 yds as hell, I can't even see 1000 yd targets anymore worth a darn. Age is a wonderful thing, not to mention I don't even try the 1K stuff due to the distance I'd have to drive for a 1K range. But it sounds like you are having fun and may have to "play" a bit more to see which you baby likes the best. In any case, good luck and enjoy that new rig.

210 VLD's or 210 JLK's, I like the JLK's better even though they are a bit more expensive, they just seem to be a bit more consistant. I've done well with the Bergers too, I'm not knocking them by any means.

Never tried the 215's, going to give the 210 SMK's a chance this spring

I tired the 210's out of my other short mag and they shot like a house on fire. It seems that the 215's even though they are heavier you can push them a little faster because of the berring surface. so the 215's with the higher BC and faster speeds I definatley like them over the 210's but the 190's cut recoil a good bit and pick up about 150fps even though the BC is lower. thats why the 190/215 dilema has me stumped.

You might find the Daily Bulletin article about Shiraz Balolia who won the F-Open class at the Berger LR Nationals with a 300WSM and the 215s. Lots of good info.
