If you look at the big heavy guns fired in 1000 yard BR you would see in the last 5 to 6 years the 308 Baer, the 300 WIN Mag, the 6.5-284 and the 300 Weatherby all disappeared from the firing line. Now these are the big blocked heavy barreled guns that really track and shoot. There is a reason it happened. They shot ok but the 300 WSM and the 6 Dasher just shot way better. The brass is better and they just plain shoot. These guys experiment and Build guns like some people change socks. They can have whatever they want. It is just fact that they don't shoot as good as what they shoot now. You get more firings from the brass and less powder used for the same velocity. They are just easier to tune and stay that way with changes in humidity and temperature. MattWildcats said:If barrell life is not an issue,a well built 300 Win Mag still hard to beat at 1K any day.
