300wm vs 300 H&H

Pro's and cons of either anyone. Our club is working on getting a 1000yd+ range and figure that might need a bit more horsepower than my 308.
Thanks

Forget the H & H. Actually, maybe even try and forget the WM. Go with the 300 WSM if you need a 30 cal. Good brass that is tough as nails. A proven track record in 1k BR ....H4350/215 Bergers/ 210 primers, and you are GTG.

The other option is a 6mm Dasher...maybe even the BEST option!!!!

Good luck,
Tod

If you can handle the recoil of those, have at it. I scored for a gentleman shooting 1K with a WSM and 210 Berger's. The recoil looked painful. There are lots of cartridges that will make 1K a lot more fun.

BTW, your 308 could be just fine with enough barrel, Varget and your choice of a 155 Palma bullet, of course you can go heavier. (I have often shot 185 Berger's at 1K).

You don't see big 30's on the line very often, not that there not there, just not as common any longer.

My favorite 1K round is the 6mm Dasher, as has been said...^^^^^

A 308 in an F-TR rig can run fine at 1000, you just have to read wind better than with an Open gun, and to be competitive in either discipline you still have to read wind well, though the barrel on the 308 will last 3x longer and you'll use less powder, cheaper brass and have less recoil.

If barrell life is not an issue,a well built 300 Win Mag still hard to beat at 1K any day.

Some will disagree

If you look at the big heavy guns fired in 1000 yard BR you would see in the last 5 to 6 years the 308 Baer, the 300 WIN Mag, the 6.5-284 and the 300 Weatherby all disappeared from the firing line. Now these are the big blocked heavy barreled guns that really track and shoot. There is a reason it happened. They shot ok but the 300 WSM and the 6 Dasher just shot way better. The brass is better and they just plain shoot. These guys experiment and Build guns like some people change socks. They can have whatever they want. It is just fact that they don't shoot as good as what they shoot now. You get more firings from the brass and less powder used for the same velocity. They are just easier to tune and stay that way with changes in humidity and temperature. Matt
