300AAC Blackout(7.62x35)

P1ZK, thanks for the info. Your numbers look pretty good for my needs. What length barrel did you use to achieve your stats? By the way nice website, I have been thinking about a 30BR myself.

Thank you... 30br is an awesome caliber. I personally think people try to do too much with it (shoot long range, hunt, or even turn it into a tactical caliber) when in fact they should just let it do what it does best... short range and VERY accurate.

My 300/221 set up is a traditional Remmy 700 with a 16.5" barrel with 7.5" twist. I run 8.5 grains of lil gun behind a 200 SMK. This set up gets me the desired 1050 fps and I only shoot it subsonic. If I want to shoot fast, I use something else. The main reason I build this gun was so I could say "HEY... come check this out"... nothing more.

You can see my 300/221 (I call it my 300 Fireball) here. http://www.p1huntclub.com/Digi_Camo_Project.php

A +1 on P1 post,
I have been shooting a 300-221 bolt custom(1:8 Lilja) for the past 4 years all subsonic with a can.
Originally tried 220 and 240 Sierra but all they do is pencil thru a deer if you do not hit the spine- yeah they go down if you go thru the heart but you will have to trail them until they bleed out- not very satisfactory and I only did it once.
Now, the Lehigh 169 with a 17 cal in the nose is a horse of a different color. I too load with LilGun 8.76 gr(yes I can get it that close with a GemPro 250) to get 1060 fps.
Sighted in at 110 yards and I limit my shots to 125 max .
It drops them nicely-on par with 243/270 with heart/lung placement.

The other deer never seem to notice the shot-nice and quite and effective.
Again, like the other post, I see no need for a lighter faster projectile with the 300 Whisper, that is why I have other guns.

As to reloading subsonic, I have tried other powders but settled on LilGun because of accuracy and repeatability- I am trying 4227 at present and it is showing some promise with the Lehigh's.
I can post results once I get back to the range and see how good they shoot.

Gary,

Do you have any info you can share with us on the different POI of the Lehigh versus the SMK? I would hate to have to shoot $75 worth of Lehigh's to get my balistics down before deer season ever happens.

P1/Gary, wow I like what I'm reading here. I have a Rem 700 that was trued and re-chambered for 22 VarTarg Turbo, it shoots very well but it's not that fun, so I think I will re-barrel it to shoot subsonic with a can also. Do you guys know of a gunsmith on the east coast that can help me with my project?

Kelly Kyle is the name of the guy that built mine.

nfhjr62,
He does AR's also. If you still want to do a subsonic 308 in an AR platform, give the guy a call.

Where on the east coast?

I'm in Maryland a.k.a. The Peoples Republic Of Maryland - the state where its people are not allowed to protect themselves

P1,

Sorry for the delay in reply but computer down and just now back online.

Without digging out my old targets from the 240 Sierra's I cannot remember just how far off they are from the Lehigh's but IIRC it was quite a bit.
Now, quite a bit for me is anything over 1" at 100yds. but I honestly don't remember.

I will try to sort thru things and see if I even kept the old targets from the
Sierra's.
There was a time when I was experimenting with bullets, powders and seating depth therefore I had so many variables cooking at once that I may not have bothered to save targets if they did not seem to pan out at the time.

Not looking for ANYTHING that close. Just wanting to know if I can play around with 200 SMK's, and then slide a couple of the Lehigh's in for hunting deer (when Texas finally approves hunting with supressors) that I can sit in my bow box, and not be too far off at 35 yards.

I think I will go ahead and order some, and just check it. I can not imagine I will be more than a pie plate off, and for a hunting gun, thats all I am looking for.

still interested in seeing your targets. @1.75 each, every shot saved can help.

Found some, appears that it prints about 4 to 5 inches low and to the left out of my gun as compared to the Lehigh's.

Just cuz', I ordered 50 of some 240 gr. Outlaw State subsonics in 308 hunting bullets last night.
Fellow who manufactures them, Paul, told me that they have the same bearing surface as a Sierra 240 MK sooooo, when they get here I will load up some -like one at a time- to see how they shoot relative to the Sierra MK
His pix of the results out of a 300 BLK look impressive on deer.
At $1.50/ea I hope so ;)

RCW3 - Did you reload any of the Lehigh 186 grain controlled fracturing bullets? I have been shooting 220 grain SMK, 125 gr Nosler BT, and 110 Hornady VMAX. I was wondering if you had a good load for the 186 grain Lehigh. At $58 a box they can get expensive. Just was looking for a starting load. I would like to try them for subsonic hog hunting.

A worked up load in QuickLoad shows 10.1 grains of A1680, with COL of 2.12" would be around 1050 fps. That just seems a little light since my 220 SMKs are at 11 grains A1680. It is out of an 8" Noveske.

Have my barrel in house and just got conformation from Midway that the backorder on the 125 SMK bullets are in the mail
