300 yard cartridge

6br, 12 twist with Bart's 80 grain.
That's a good combination for 300 IMHO. Might even try a 10 twist. There's a big bc jump when ya go from 80's up to the 87-95 class bullets and they still shoot very well, too. FWIW, I don't think the 80's give up a thing to 68's, even at 100. I've shot a bunch of both and really can't say one is better than the other in a good 12 twist bbl. But when I go to 200 or 300, the 80's have a small edge out there. Pull the trigger at the wrong time though, and neither will go where I want it. Lol!

That's beside the point. He brought what wins. You have to also realize that
the Tack Driver brings in the best of the best. And most of those bring a 6ppc
for that yardage. Now two time champion of Tack Driver series has been Bart
Sauter, and I do believe he shot both with the BRA. He out agged the score
component with it. Bottom line.....Even though Speedy won the group component,
Bart was further ahead in score. But we are talking a better group cartridge. Bart
Dang near had a third one. I like Speedy but would rather shoot like Bart.....LOL

Here's the Grand Agg and result......
I agree with you , for benchrest competition at the highest level. 6PPC is what’s winning. For someone who is dabbling in F class as well as benchrest at 300 yards I think a lot of folks would agree that a 6BR is more well rounded. Can take the same rifle and compete out to 1,000 yards. If I could have only one gun it would be a 6BR

Ive been typing in some numbers to ballistic calcs and was surprised at what you said but appears very true that the 68s don't give up much to the 80s.

Also surprising to me was that a berger 90bt at 3050 had better wind drift at 300 yards than a berger 108 at 2850. Only by a very little amount but still interesting.

Is there a dual purpose round that would be great for both f class and bench?
A lot of comments are related to just benchrest. They are not the same. Benchrest they're shooting 5 rounds "rapidly" when get the "condition" and you have personal flags scattered in your line of sight to the target. Fclass, 20 rounds, delay between each round, no personal flags (a few large flags along the boundary).

If you are shooting over flags in your Matches at 300, go with a 6PPC.
High BC will loose against ultimate accuracy with a good shooter shooting over flags.

Bart has shot both a 6PPC and a 6BRA at the TackDriver.
Speedy shoots a 6PPC.
Wayne Campbell shoots a 6 PPC.
Ben Brubaker shoots a 6PPC
Jason Owen’s shoots his version of a 6BR.
I’m sure Jeff Peinhardt shoots a 6PPC.

I wonder how changing the Tack Driver event venue will impact cartridge selection/outcome? Perhaps those that have shot at both ranges can chime in… (@jcline)?

I'm working on putting together my first short range bench rest rifle. After shooting in my first Tackdriver match this year and talking with a few people who shoot short range bench rest I decided to go with the 30BR. Some of the benefits of the 30BR that were related to my experience was, extended barrel and brass life, very easy to tune and keep in tune and easy to load for.
Good luck, shooting is especially fun when you can see where the bullet hits the target. Besides wondering how the he'll did it go there.

For what it's worth.....I'm not giving up on my 7's. I mean, split the
difference between on what the 6ppc and 30br can do, a 7 has some
unlocked potential. It's money well wasted along this journey for 300
yards/meters......

6BR or 6BRA with 105/107 grain bullets in a 8-twist barrel wins consistently at my weekly 300 yard F-Class and bench league. A couple guys shoot 30 BR and also do well with it.

Both the ppc and BRA have won the tackdriver. But you have some of the best shootings in the country there and many are very good at reading flags. I think that match is won or lost on the score target. At local match I would probably opt for the BR or BRA. The small accuracy advantage of the ppc most likely will not be needed, Id rather have the ballistic advantage.

Can you get enough of the ballistic advantage form a bigger PPC like Bart's grinch?
I have shot Bart’s 80 grn in a PPC with a long throat out of a 1-12 twist barrel at around 3250 fps.

The BC advantage is miniscule, which means you have to approach the precision of your typical 6PPC shooting a 65/68 grn bullet.

I did shoot a .225 100 yard Agg at Seymour a couple years ago with the 80’s, but at 200 it got pushed around just as much as any 68 grn.

300 yards, (or meters), is still a Short Range game. Put the most accurate thing you own on the bench and read the conditions.

BC is not the only advantage with wind defection, speed also gives an advantage, and I thought that maybe the additional case capacity in the grinch though not as much as a BR would help?

For 300 yard f class I would go with a 6 br or one of the improved versions. I've never shot benchrest so can't recommend for it.
