.300 WSM WOW!

Common load for a SAUM is 180gr Hybrid at 2950fps which is drift of 52.7”

Pretty much lineball between SAUM and WSM

I don’t know if anyone in Australia running a 284 or derivative in the mid to high 2900fps range with most SAUM’s running between 2920 and 2950fps

My .284 Shehane, with 32" barrel and H4831SC, consistently ran ~2940 fps. One particular Krieger inexplicably ran ~2965 fps with the same load.

How did your primer pockets hold up Steve?

Most here in Australia lean towards H4350 over SC

I did pick up some 4813SC to try in the 300

Case life is 8-9 firings. Barrel life is ~1800 rounds. The misunderstanding most shooters have is that .284 Win and .284 Shehane are basically the same. They are not. When both are loaded with 180 Hybrids, .284 Win is probably best served with H4350. I've used it myself. .284 Shehane, however, has just enough case capacity to exploit the slower, cooler H4831SC, and obtain higher velocity and longer barrel life as a benefit. Fire-forming cases is a PITA and not for everyone, but offers the mentioned advantages.

I initially used IMR 7828 SSC in my .300 WSM with 34" barrel and 230 Hybrids. The load produced ~2950 fps and was very precise. Unfortunately, I could not manage bag handling, no matter how many tricks. Dropping to H4831SC produced ~2865 fps, similar precision, a broad .8 grain window, and barely manageable bag characteristics. My .300 WSM is a BAT 3LL in Manners carbon fiber stock and weighs 21# 14oz. (9.92 kilos for the Imperially challenged)

Thanks for the info.

I’ve picked up some 2213SC as I mentioned above.
Wondering if RL23 would be worth a shot in the WSM as well

Allegedly Re23 (alongside AR-Comp and Re16 the new-generation Bofors manufactured Alliant powders) is temperature insensitive thanks to 'TX Technology'.

We're only just starting to get these grades into the UK, no chance to look at them yet. I wonder too how much nitroglycerin is in the new grades as it varies considerably between the older members of the Bofors manufactured Norma / Alliant families. Some have less than 5% by weight, but Norma 203-B / Re15 is listed as 7.5% and MRP (very close to Re22 if not the same thing) at 11.5%.

I’ve hear good things about RL16 and RL23

I certainly like the velocity RL15 gives me in my Dasher, I have been able to handle its temp sensitivity without too much problem.

My local store can easily obtain the reloader powders for me.

Thinking RL23 might be also worth a run in the straight 284

I'm impressed by what people are saying about the 300WSM's wide load and temperature tolerance. If I can stray off-topic, does this also apply to the 300 SAUM?

Hello Laurie! I think (have not shot the .300 SAUM / I have had a couple of 7 SAUMs) that if you were to improve the SAUM you could reach the nodes where the 215 Hybrid likes to shoot. So far, myself and 2 other shooters I know, shoot the 215s at 2910-2920 and they shoot! I think an improved SAUM could get you there... But that is only an opinion. AND I believe I would try RL-23 first>>>it produces loads of velocity!

Ben I've been playing with R-23 and the 215's and I can tell you I think it's going to work, Only shot a couple of matches with the 215's. Can't wait to get back and try a few more tests. And that won't happen till April. And depending on your rifle you may need a Drop tub.

Hello Joe! I am running 65.7grs of H4831sc to get to the 2910 node, with the 215s. My guess would be somewhere between 63.8 and 64.7 of the RL-23. Am I in the correct vicinity?
