300 WSM Freebore?

Im fixing to have a new reamer made for the 300 WSM what's the ideal FB for this case using up to a 215 grain bullet? Also I want to just skim cut the necks on the brass to true them up what's the best neck dia to work with on this as well? Brass being used is Winchester.

Get with Thomas Holbrook on this forum. He had one throated for the 230Hybrids. I believe he can shoot the 215's w/o issues too. He can help you out.. Just P.M. him>>>He will be glad to help..

I think the freebore requirements should be the same in any barrel for a given bullet no matter the chamber behind it. Freebore determines how much sticks out past the end of the neck (or conversely is still in the case), with the goal to get the tail of the bullet up to the neck shoulder and still be able to seat.

So that said, looking at the SAAMI drawings the 300WSM has about the same neck than a 308 give or take your trim length. My experience is with my F-TR chambers.

I'm going off memory now, I don't have my notes here, but I hand throated my barrels with a PTG unithroater from a .168FB to shoot the 200s and 215s. Based on my before and after measurements I think you'll be in the right spot at about a 225. If you can get Kiff on the phone I will bet he's made one for someone already.

For the 308 the ideal freebore for 185 Jugg is about 170
For 200s its about 200 or 210 and
For the 215s its probably 235 or longer. (I know of someone who has a 250 or 270 and can still seat to the lands with the 215s but he has very little bullet in the case)

All that is based on Berger bullets. The problem with 215s is that if you get a perfect freebore to shoot 215s you will never be able to reach the lands with anything else except maybe the 200s but seated very close to falling out. That isn't necessarily a problem, just a consideration.

XTR is probably right. I shoot a .205 freebore with a 210 VLD. My pressure ring is right even to very slightly ahead of the neck shoulder junction. Matt

James,
I run a 215 FB with a 340 neck (for 215 and 230 bergers). Norma Brass comes brand new at .0155 thick. If I remember correctly Winchester brass is close to that. You will probably have a .338 to .339 loaded round with unturned brass. So it all depends how much you want to turn off the brass and how much clearance you want.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll play safe and go with a .210 FB I can always take it deeper but I can't make it less once the reamer is made.

If you want to reserve the option to shoot 200s then a 210 will be good, if you're really going to live with the 215s then I'd go 225. Then you can always get a unithroater from PTG and tweak it where ever you want. I'd also talk to whoever is making your reamer and see what they have to say. I know PT&G keeps designs for certain combinations.

Here's my reamer. It is specific to 230 Hybrids but Erik Cortina successfully shot 215 Hybrids from a barrel chambered with it. I have jumped 230's up to ~.030" without problem. This reamer has proven to be nearly ideal for 230's.
