300 wsm build

I'm kicking around the idea of building a 300WSM for myself. It would be for LR f-class. Is there any reason to not do a barrel block? 10 twist or faster? I see that berger now recommends a 9 for the 215 and 230. I plan on shooting 210s or maybe the 215's.

I have had a LOT of WSM's, the barrel block is your choice I don't like it but no reason really.
if your not going over the 215's stay with a 10 twist. I have shot 230's from the 10s and they are fine if you keep the speed up so I think the 9 is only for shorter barrels or if your shooting 230's and up.

I would not do a block. I believe they are not big enough in a light gun while trying to keep weight down. I have seen a bunch of them shoot rather poorly. The 210 is a good bullet, very accurate. The 215 can shoot good also. The recoil in a WSM is really stout, even with a brake. To lay and shot 20 shot strings in F-Class, with no brake, I would avoid the 230. One reason is the freebore required for the 230 is about. 280 and the freebore for the 210 VLD is around .210 to .230. If you throat it for a 230 and want to shoot touching and in the lands, you will lose a lot of neck. My 300 WSM likes a lot of hold on the bullet. Matt

Matt and I disagree on the Block Idea. I have one and it shoots very well. I also like 1-10 twist with 210 or 215 vld's.

Dave Powly and all of them got rid of them. You must have the only one up there. I never saw one a light gun with a block ever win an aggregate or set a record. That tells what shoots and what doesn't. Matt

Sorry Matt I've had a block L.G. since it started in 95. I think if you look back I was in for score when Eddie won group. If I had more time to try things I know it would be competitive!

I was sure Eddie won all the aggs in 1995. Matt

Edit- I just went and looked and I didn't see your name on any aggregate wins in light gun.

A 10 twist will do everything you need. Most of us in F-class either run 215's or 230's in the 300 wsm. I don't think a barrel block really matters. It's all about getting a stock that will track in the bags due to the recoil of the 300wsm.
