What speeds should I be looking for in a 30" barrel? Having one built and deciding on powder and components
Thanks
Thanks
Jim, if you are going to try RL-23 with the 215s, start at 63.8grs and work up to 65.0grs in 0.2increments.. At least start with CCI BR2s, they work best in my .300. AND I have found out thru friends and personally that right at 22-23OFF the lands is just about where the 215s shoot best. Somewhere between 2885 and 2920 is where you will find the sweet-spot. RL-16 works AWESOMELY with the 200-20Xs.I can’t get RL 16 to shoot for crap! h4350 shoots very small...trying RL23 this coming week
The Norma brass is extremely strong. However, RL-23 produces LOTS of velocity with less pressure. The 2900 node is really easy to reach. My brass comes out just as easy as it went in.This is freaking amazing I have never been able to achieve 29 + with the 300 WSM without destroyed primer pockets with the 200 grain class bullets my accuracy node was 2800 to 2850 no more.
Ben r u shooting 300 meter match friday with 300?The Norma brass is extremely strong. However, RL-23 produces LOTS of velocity with less pressure. The 2900 node is really easy to reach. My brass comes out just as easy as it went in.
No Sir... We have a 1000 yard match Saturday. I will be at that one readying myself for the L/R State Match at the end of the month..Ben r u shooting 300 meter match friday with 300?
Hello Ron! RL-23 not only produced all the velocity I needed, it produced excellent accuracy and NO flyers all the way out to 1000 yards. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised! My freebore WAS .240 1080 rounds ago. I use a 1-9.5 barrel twist 32" long..Not to derail the thread at all, but as we all know, each barrel has its individual characteristics and as well, the length of throat / leade can have a great impact on what velocity is obtainable. - I was told there was NO way that I could be getting the velocity that I recorded on one particular gun ( 416 Barrett, getting 3424 FPS with 450 gr. Bullets and Reloder 50 with no bolt lift or flattened primers).
On the 300 WSM’s that I’m shooting, I’m running a .265 leade which puts the bottom of the bearing surface of 215’s above the neck / shoulder junction. The 230 hybrids seem like they should have around .280 from what I’ve calculated. The 230 gr. OTM (tan box) looks like they will work okay in a.265 throat. - I’m looking forward to trying RL-23 with the recent reports that you guy s have provided.

Stan, that particular match I will be using a 7mm Sherman Short. BUT you will be able to see what several .300s with RL-23 and 215s will do at the end of the month. The AZ L/R State is on for 2 days and there will be me, Tim Vaught (TX), Don Diffey (TX), and if Omar Alonzo makes it (TX), ALL will be shooting .300WSMs with 215 and RL-23! Keep your eyes peeled for the results that I would assume will be posted on this forum!Well shoot dots you said an upcoming 1000 yd match would love to see a match report on that 300wsm.
I take it this not a benchrest match for groups an score.Stan, that particular match I will be using a 7mm Sherman Short. Correct! It will be an F-Open match. Six (6) matchs over a 2 day period. Max score will be 1200 + X count. I have never seen a 1200 at 1000 yards! I would bet a very substantial sum it will never happen. But you can bet everyone will will be trying for TINY groups in the X ring! LOL!!I take it this not a benchrest match for groups an score.
I have found the same as Shoot dots in regards to RE23. In fact I think I tried it before he did.
I initially tried 2213SC (4831 I think you guys call it) and maxes out with pressure at a little under 2900fps.
Changed to RE23 and I dont seeing pressure until high 2900’s/low 3000’s.
2920-40 FPS is where the node is in my 30” barrel and is well down from max acheivable with RE23.
