300 WSM 1000 yard ladder test.

for the past 3 weeks I've been tuning and finding the optimum seating depth for my new 300 WSM using the 210 grain weight Bullets. Well I finally found a seating depth I was happy with and decided to do a ladder test with powder charges at 1K. I started at 63.0 grains and went up to 64.5 grains of H4350, F210m primer and the Berger 210 VLD.
This pic posted I know is just luck but talking about one of those OH Wow!!! Moments I'll take it. The last time I shot something even remotely close was with my 22 Dasher at 1K which was under 1" and that was really just playing around.

This group was 63.5 grains at -.015 from the lands. The 64.0 charge was around 1.5" and 64.5 probably just under 3", 63.0 well let's say it just didn't shoot well.

Nice part of this there was 3 new shooters at the range amazed over the HG I was using. After all was done we all drove down to the target and those guys were like holy sh*t (more so than myself).

It's only 3 shots but again it was a ladder test. And again it was shot at 1K

That's smaller than tiny.

When I've clustered a few shots like that anywhere beyond 300 yards, I have no way to be 100% sure of what caused it.

One is everything was perfect; all variables in the middle zero point of their range in all directions. The other is all those variables were various amounts in all directions such that they mostly cancelled each other out.

I've no way to prove either way, but one has a much higher probability than the other.

It does feel good to do that well. Too bad we rarely repeat it.

I'll think about some.

Barrel twist is fixed and has no variables in the rifle.

Velocity that's faster than average that happens with the muzzle pointing lower at bullet exit compensates the same if reversed. Both bullets go into one hole.

Unbalanced bullet jumping left leaving barrel that was pulled right when fired will go center. Same if both directions are reversed.

Use your imagination and you'll come up with dozens of things that counteract each other's so all bullets go through the same hole.

100 yard benchrest record at .0077" for 5 shots was fired from a 30 caliber rifle that's not shot any others. How many variables cancelled each other out to do that? Or was everything perfect?

I find your replies here to James' thread and his shared test results condescending at the least, that in many ways reminds me of a fguffey type incentive and mentality.

On this forum, accuracy results and the endeavors to them are often shared, discussed, and applauded, which symbolizes the forums name, "Accurate Shooter", well.
James is no new comer to accuracy or competition, and his precision accuracy accomplishments and skills are of a long list and over many years. I respect, welcome, and applaud them, no matter the magnitude.

My Thanks goes to @JamesnTN for sharing.... inspiring and envy !.!.!

Barrel twist has a lot to do with accuracy, especially in long range.

Some guys repeat things over and over. From a comment you made the other day, record barrels are usually just a one time thing. This is not true. I have seen more then one barrel shoot multiple records at 1000 yards. Matt
 
Excellent shooting. This shows what you can do with good equipment and proper tuning methods. From the sounds of the ladder this was no fluke and you have tuned it how you should have. Something tells me you'll see many good groups from it and all of your rifles. I have seen this kind of accuracy often when a guy knows what hes doing.
Hard work+good equipment+knowledge=success.

Last time I checked, "usually" means most of the time. Which means exceptions you mention happens.

Therefore, my comment was very true.

I may have helped him a lot with that dose of reality. Most rifle shooters are ignorant of such things. They're usually the same as false positives in medical tests.

Thanks guys for your input. As we all know that type of group is a fluke no matter how much detail we put into our loads and technique.

Now to answer a few questions....

The barrel is a Brux 1-10 twist 1.450 dia. At 32" using a modified Harrell's brake. Neck dia .340 loaded round .336 sizing bushing used .331
Free bore is .220
Action is a Bat M dual port RBLPRE
Stock is a Shehane Maxi Tracker
Scope is a NF 12-42
Bullet used a Berger 210 VLD jumped .015
Powder H4350 that particular target 63.5 grains. Measured to +/- 1 kernal
Primer used Federal 210

Conditions that morning temps were 68-70* wind 3-5 mph humidity 60% pressure 29.89

If I left anything out please ask and I'll reply

I'll be back out this week to shoot some backup groups to verify if the accuracy node is there or if I need to tweak it a bit. If anything my guess I'll adjust seating depth or neck tension, but we will see.

The only reason it is usually is because the records are that small that the odds of breaking one period is next to nothing. But I have seen many barrels break more then one. A good barrel, with the right loads and good bullets can do it. I can see you don't follow or know much about 600 or 1000 yard benchrest. Matt
