300 win mag norma brass info

I purchased a new barrel to rebarrel my 300 winmag once this barrel is toast and would like to get any info I can on norma brass for this cartridge. It will be a low use bench rifle for shooting steal and maybe a stationary hunt every once in a while. My current barrel had to short a throat for what I wanted so I am already going to have the throat lengthened on the next barrel and was wondering if I should have a custom reamer ground for just the brass and the bullets I plan to use? The 300 WM has grown on me during the time I have had it and I would like to be able to take advantage of the quality that this brass has to offer over the Remington I have been using on this last barrel. Also if anybody has measured water volume on this brass I would be interested in that info as well as anything pertaining to dimensions that you might have. I can't handle my rifle's or brass while I am out of the country so rely on drawings and theory to figure out most problems like this from here. That and the help I get here.

The barrel is a Heavy varmint straight taper 10 twist that will be finished at 22" plus break/mount for can. I will be trying out the new hybrids in this as I know the velocity isn't going to be close to my current 28" varmint taper barrel. I figure get the most BC I can and try to keep them at usable velocity.

You will LOVE the norma brass. We spent months trying to get my buddy's gun to shoot well. We kept getting stuck in MOA land.

We were getting lifesucked by crappy WIN brass. We switched to Norma and RWS brass, and the gun came to life.... A hard lesson learned..

Norma scaled +/- 2 grains which is pretty good. RWS scaled +/- just over 1 grain which is outstanding for the size of a 300WM case. On the other end of the quality spectrum, Black hills brass was +/- 7 or 8 grains.

We didn't water volume test any of the brass. But RWS has a higher weight and lower internal volume. We backed off the powder charge 5 equivalent grains of H1000 to run RWS.

You will be pleased with the Norma. Good brass is all the difference in the world.

(we scrapped that WIN and Fed brass... we couldn't think of a scenario where bad brass would be worth having.... and on the 300WM, you're shooting a big magnum... relatively expensive, and every shot counts. Get good brass)

RWS and Lapua definitely make better qualiy cases than any mass produced brass. They cost more, and they're worth it. However, I shoot a common hunting rifle in 300 Win Mag with Winchester or Federal brass, and it consistently shoots MOA groups.

I think you'll find that the bullet you shoot will perform better if you know the velocity of your handloads. Each particular bullet (different brand and weight) performs best at a specific velocity. If you don't know the optimum velocity for your particular bullet, you'll never know the real value of switching components. Finding the best velocity is critical to get consistent accuracy. Use a chronograph to develop your handloads.

I exclusively shoot Norma brass through my McMillan chambered in 300 Win Mag. I found the brass to be very consistent. I minimally neck turn the brass to achieve a uniform neck thickness throughout. The difference in headspace measurement between new and fired formed brass is approximately .015 in my rifle and only neck size until necessary and bump the shoulder with a body die. Runout has consistently been less than .001 on fired brass. Unfortunately, Lapua does not make brass in 300 Win Mag.
