300 win mag for elk help !

If anyone has a good load for a factory 300 win mag with a bullet suitable for elk can you let me know?
I’m trying to tune up a friends rifle for elk hunt, I have been trying 180gr Sierra gamechangers and I can’t get anything under 3/4 inch at best at 100. What’s a good 180gr bullet that’s easy to tune for elk?
Thanks
Brandon

Elk are tough critters whether in PA or Utah

I have had great luck with the 180 accubonds. Better luck with the 190 long range accubonds. Both in 300win mag. They shoot great in my gun. Using imr4350. I haven’t shot an elk with mine, but wouldn’t hesitate with either of those bullets. You might try some other weights maybe the 165’s or 200’s might shoot better in your gun. They make accubonds in both. Sierra SBT in 180’s might also shoot, try those.

3/4 inch at best at 100.
What's wrong with that? It's a hunting rifle not a bench gun. 3/4" @ 100 computes to something like 7.5 inches @ 1000 yds. Do you know what size the kill zone is on a broadside Elk? 16-20 inches. And no I am NOT advising shooting Elk @ 1000 yds. dedogs

My old bread and butter elk load for 300 win was 72 grains RL 22 with a 200 gr accubond or 200 gr speer spitzer. Good elk floppers !
This was in MY gun , so work up with caution.

Maybe it is me... but what is wrong with an honest 0.75” at 100 yards?

The quick kill zone is about the size of a basketball or about a 10” diameter and the double lung zone is about 16”diameter.

Using the 10” standard, it would seem like the bullet you have now is more than adequate in the group size department.

If the velocity stats are good, then what else would motivate looking for a better bullet? Does the gun have a history that says it was capable of much less?

Since you have already tried the Sierra, I would try the Berger and see what develops.

I heard from some friends that parts of the Rockies near Breckenridge got their first dusting of snow the other night... elk season will be around the corner before we know it!

Good Luck with the development and I’m in for the range report!

Taking the second portion of your questions first:

dedogs hits this close to home. Why? Because the hunters are feeling the pressure from the internet reports of fabulous accuracy and necessarily feel the pressure to get the very best they can achieve from their ammunition choices. We are made to believe that 3/4" at 100 yards in today's accuracy driven world is sort of ho-hum when you consider posts claiming 1/4" groups consistently with hunting components. But when we examine the 3/4" potential mathematically as you all have done here, this performance is perfectly acceptable.

It is the pressure from the stories and reports regarding small groups with hunting components which are causing the questions to be asked about 3/4" groups and ways to improves these.

Enjoy the process!:D

OOPS! Answering the first part of your question:

The first elk I shot was with a 'hunt with what got' rifle, a Remington M721 in the historic chamber, .300 H&H. Loaded with a 180 grain Partition, I managed a broadside shot at 350 yards, removing the heart from it's circulation system. He turned, wobbled and collapsed.

Since that day, it's been a parade of highly recommended or tested bullets in .30 caliber including but not limited to the Partition, Scirocco, A-Frame, Berger Hunters, TTSX and Hammer Hunters. All have performed as needed since I wait for the shot I want or pass.

As an aside though, I have tested, not hunted, some of the Berger commercial ammunition loaded with premium bullets exhibiting superb accuracy. There is a .300 WM loaded with the 185gr. Berger Classic Hunter which would appeal to your needs.

Enjoy!

My 300WM elk load is 75.5g of H1000, CCI BR-2, Fed miltary brass and Hornady 212g ELD-X. Of course work up to this load in your particular rifle.

3/4" groups, you're in great shape. My brother has taken 6 Elk and countless deer and black bear with a 30.06 760 Remington slide action that never could manage 1" groups.

It is a dream for big game rifles to shoot under MOA.

Lower powered scopes, tiny barrels, stocks for hunting and you get .75 MOA?

You have a precious combination.

I hunted quite a few years for elk while living in Wyoming. The only bullet I ever used was a 165 gr. Trophy Bonded in my 300 Win mag. The elk hated it!
