I’m trying to tune up a friends rifle for elk hunt, I have been trying 180gr Sierra gamechangers and I can’t get anything under 3/4 inch at best at 100. What’s a good 180gr bullet that’s easy to tune for elk?
Taking the second portion of your questions first:
What's wrong with that? It's a hunting rifle not a bench gun. 3/4" @ 100 computes to something like 7.5 inches @ 1000 yds. Do you know what size the kill zone is on a broadside Elk? 16-20 inches. And no I am NOT advising shooting Elk @ 1000 yds. dedogs
dedogs hits this close to home. Why? Because the hunters are feeling the pressure from the internet reports of fabulous accuracy and necessarily feel the pressure to get the very best they can achieve from their ammunition choices. We are made to believe that 3/4" at 100 yards in today's accuracy driven world is sort of ho-hum when you consider posts claiming 1/4" groups consistently with hunting components. But when we examine the 3/4" potential mathematically as you all have done here, this performance is perfectly acceptable.
It is the pressure from the stories and reports regarding small groups with hunting components which are causing the questions to be asked about 3/4" groups and ways to improves these.
Enjoy the process!
OOPS! Answering the first part of your question:
The first elk I shot was with a 'hunt with what got' rifle, a Remington M721 in the historic chamber, .300 H&H. Loaded with a 180 grain Partition, I managed a broadside shot at 350 yards, removing the heart from it's circulation system. He turned, wobbled and collapsed.
Since that day, it's been a parade of highly recommended or tested bullets in .30 caliber including but not limited to the Partition, Scirocco, A-Frame, Berger Hunters, TTSX and Hammer Hunters. All have performed as needed since I wait for the shot I want or pass.
As an aside though, I have tested, not hunted, some of the Berger commercial ammunition loaded with premium bullets exhibiting superb accuracy. There is a .300 WM loaded with the 185gr. Berger Classic Hunter which would appeal to your needs.
Enjoy!
