If anyone cares to know, I went out today and worked up a max load for my 300 SAUM using RL17. Shooting 208gr AMAX, I was able to reach 2931 fps, but that load had a cratered primer with stiff ejection. The loads that show the most promise are in the 2880 fps range. I also shot some Hybrid V 100.
I loaded from 58 up to 60.5gr of RL 17 and Hybrid V 100. I reached pressure signs with both powders at 60gr. The RL17 was good for 30-80 fps more velocity at a given charge. For instance at 60gr HV100 I was getting 2890 fps and 60gr RL17 gave me 2931 fps. The loads that look to be the most consistent are 59.5-60gr HV100 and 58.5-59gr RL17, both of which are about 2880 fps.
FWIW, with HV100, I was able to hit 3139 fps with 175 SMKs at my max,or beyond max - however you see it).
