300 Remington Ultra Mag

I am curious about building a 300 RUM hunting setup. I currently have a Savage 270WSM that I was thinking about converting over to this caliber. I would be putting a new barrel on the gun so the chamber is not an issue. What about the bolt face and extractor? The RUM has a slightly smaller, I believe 1 hundredth of an inch base. Is this doable? Would a standard say 30-06 caliber a better place to start?

The 300 RUM uses a standard Magnum BF like the 270 WSM. Don't go by brass dimensions as they vary greatly from brand to brand and, lot to lot. Make sure your action is long enough to handle the RUM.

The 300RUM is based on a 3.68 Magazine length,The 270 WSM is on a 2.85 Magazine length.A conversion would mean a single shot rifle. The empty 300RUM case is 2.85 IMHO stay with the 270WSM it's a great game cart.,and it doesn't FEEL so bad when you pull the trigger

First I would like to say that I love the .270WSM I think the .270WSM is the best all around cartridge but anyways.....
You should make sure that your action will take the 300 RUM because you probably have a short action right now. With your bolt face you can go with any belted magnum, WSM or WSSM brass. I would personally go with the 300 RUM I know a lot of people that shoot it and they like it a lot. The 300 RUM has a lot of boom flop. I think that the .3006 is not as popular as it used to be and people are looking into the newer cartridges. I personally think that the 3006 is from the caveman era but maybe that is just because I am young.:D

I agree with CJ6 on the .270 WSM. I have owned and shot the 300 RUM and I currently own the .270 WSM. Although the accuracy of the 300 RUM was just as good as my .270 WSM, I'd still pick it over the RUM everytime. Just my opinion. Bill

Yes i didn't want to particularly part with it if anything i would like to get a new barrel and make it a 300 WSM I was just curious, and i didn't mean build a 3006 I meant that i have a 3006 that hasn't left the safe in two years, because I have used the 270WSM. Can I simply put a magnum bolt in the 3006, I have never built a gun as you can tell.

Ammo costs 30-06 $14-25 a box,270wsm $22-35 box,300RUM $ 28-65 a box.I own all 3, with a proper bullet the 06 will do all you need to 300yds on game the 270wsm shoots flatter with good results to 400yds, as far as any sane person should be taking game anyhow. The 300 RUM is pure power not needed at those ranges, that said the 300 with a 200-220gr bonded or solid is super moose or elk medicine in cover
