300 PRC Build

Mike TackleBerry

ELR Fanatic
I'm doing a 300 prc build and want to shoot the 230-245 bergers around 2900-3000 fps out of a Bartlein I'm having done. Would I be fine with a 9 twist barrel or better served with the 8.5?

Id check out the 220 Berger LRHT bullets. BC is the same as the 230 but they can be pushed much faster. In a 24" barrel and H1000 I didn't hit pressure until 3070 fps. Stupid accurate. 245s have quite a bit more recoil than the 220 berger load and theyre pretty much identical for wind drift. I did one for a buddy and he settled on a stupid mild load at 2850 fps in a 24" barrel. Shot 1/4 moa at 600 yds. He shot a 2" group at 1000 with it as well.

A 1 in 9 is what I have used and they stabilize the 245s just fine. Unless you are shooting at sea level in extreme cold that should be sufficient. A tighter twist will create more torque.

I run a 30 nosler with the 245s at sea level here in Houston with a 9 twist. I have never had any issues with stabilization. The 245s were also super forgiving and easy to tune.

Hornady is running more twist with all the PRC's. More than what we would normally use, but it works. I have built 6.5, 7, and 300 's. All shoot great.

I would go 1:8

I went 1:8 years ago to push long heavy ELD/VLD's with a 300WM and 30-06 and have never had any issues.

Always future proof your builds. No reason at all to go with such slow twist rates this is not 1950's and the 220 Swift saga.

Outside of benchrest shooting very light bullets for caliper always go 1 to 2 faster than you need in this day and age of super long/heavy for caliper ELD/VLD bullets.

If you where talking about 30BR and never going to shoot anything heavier than 123gr. then sure go with the ultra conservative proven twist rate for something this specialized.

You have to get pretty carried away or insanely fast to get into trouble and even then it is not a total loss since we also have access to plenty of monolithic bullets just look at the 8.6 BLK what is that 1:5 twist from a 12-14 inch barrel or something insane like that.

This is not the 1950's you are not going to have bullets spinning apart at the velocities you want to play in and the twist rates being recommended. The one time I listened to Brux instead of myself I regret to this day!

I think but can't be positive that an 8-8.5 would give optimum BC in the heavier .308 bullets with the addition of being able to run some heavier monos if you decided you wanted to try them. I built a 9 twist improved version of the 300PRC and wish I had gone with an 8. I shoot the 208/225 grain bullets.

My 300 rum shoots 230gr OTM in a 10 twist. I'm at 400' to 700'. My velocity is much higher than 2900 fps though.

I have a 1:9 and a 1:9.5 on the way.
You can't go wrong with a 1:10 with 195 - 215 grain imo.
If i were to be shooting 220 gr and above,i'd go with 8.5.
