300 norma mag

Well I'm waitin on my barrel, and I have brass and bullets (230g Berger) and all powder. Just wondering which powder and how much to start out with. Also did u like the caliber? Good accuracy? Lots of recoil? Muzzle Velocity? Thanks

I have a reamer set up for the bergers used one time if you are interested ? The cartridge will flat warp a bullet, it will be great for hunting. Forget it for f classin sorry Jimmy. That's the guy that developed the 338 norma later necked it down to the 300 norma. We are pretty good buds. The cartridge fried the barrel in 350 rounds! Now the 338 norma is bad ass !I did not find the 300 to be very accurate for long strings of fire, like f classin but you can get it to group for five.Best velocity powder was re 25.You can run anything from h4831 to 50 bmg in it ,it is that overbore.I got 2950 fps out of 50 bmg if that tells you how overbore it is,lol.Tried a lot of different bullets too,230's 215's even have some bullets left over if needed .I can go on and on,I'll help any way I can.

Ok back again, glass is full and I'm ready lol. Your gonna need a home made body die as this case gets fired you won't be able to have the same charge weights . You can expect 3000 fps out of the berger 230's but that's MAX. On new brass 82g of n 165 gave 3000 fps 83g h 1000 gave 3010,85g retumbo 3015fps, 84g re 25 3100fps,re 22 and h 4831 your in the 78g range,92 g 50 bmg these are hot loads!!! These are for berger 230's .I'm using a big strong bat action so take that into account.Be careful you are on uncharted waters .Holler if you need help!

Thanks for the info. But not good info lol. I guess I'll give it a try. Already got reamer and everything else. Just waitin on barrel. Rifle will weigh around 18#. That barrel life u talk about is pitiful! Thanks for the info though. What kind of accuracy can I expected for 100y to 1000yd. MOA? That would suk!

Warp is my slang for really send a bullet .I have 200 230g nib and 47 in an opened box all the same lot #. At 18 lbs the recoil will be manageable but it will jump a little ;D Hind sight being 20 20 I would have molyed the bullets from the start.Watch the base diameters above the extractor grove on your cases.Accuracy wise the best it shot was a 185 at 1k.I could get to group for five, then go to a match, after the sighters it would be everywhere .I had plenty of barrel too,1.35 for 5 inches taper to 1 inch go figure ! N570 was the dirtiest powder I've ever shot ,with these big boys and that amount of powder the issue is magnified .I'd like to think you'll get one moa.Tom I don't have enough 215's to mess with maybe 20.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm gonna try retumbo and h1000 and RL33. R the 230's the target hybrids? If so how much u want for them$$???? Thanks 338!

You will find a lot more shooters experienced with the 300 Norma over at snipershide.com just search on 300 norma mag. The signal to noise ratio at snipershide is lower than here but there are many experienced shooters and builders on that site.

"i was wondering about this caliber a while ago and finally emailed Jimmie Sloan. He assures me that if the barrel is well taken care of the barrel should hold good accuracy from 2500-3000 rounds!!!..." From another forum discussing the same question.

Maybe you should call your 'pretty good bud' and see what has changed his mind to such a degree.

Regards.

I have @500 rds on this and just shot 210 Bergers RL33 3 shot 1.6" @ 300yds, I hope I have a lot of barrel life left.

RL33 is definitely the powder - was advised by a Kiwi on here a few weeks back and just managed to get some. My load is 100% capacity without being compressed on my throat. We lengthened the throat by approx .160" over the standard spec reamer from PT&G.
Norma cases with Fed 215 primers and 93gr RL33 = 3080 fps.
RL25 was FASTER than Retumbo and I cooked the first trial load case because I added a grain to my top pressure Retumbo load.
RL33 is giving another 60pfs over Retumbo at what I believe is max pressure with 230H Bergers.
Still early days but looking very promising as a long range rock crusher!?
But too much recoil and heat for F Class - running a 1/10 straight 1.25" Krieger at 31".
