300 Norma Improved 35 degree

Im starting this thread for load data for those that are using my reamer design. There are a lot of different 300 Norma improved designs out there, do not assume the load data is interchangeable because there are slight case capacity differences.

I am finally getting back around to tuning my light weight, with Br season finally starting and the 2k match coming its been on the back burner.

On these light contour barrels I start by shooting a normal ladder. I call it a pressure ladder because all Im really doing is getting an idea of a max and whether the powder/bullet/primer combo looks like it will shoot in this barrel. I am not looking at these to tune, but, should I continue with this combo and if so, it gives me an idea of where to start.

I started this one on 215 Bergers, H1000, and cci250s. Neck tension was light at only .001"

This is a 600yd pressure ladder shot from a 10lb rifle with optics and bipod.20200531_114215.jpg

B1 85-3025
R1 85.5-3010
Y1 86-3023
G1 86.5-3052
B2 87-3078
R2 87.5-3077
Y2 88-3090
G2 88.5-3111
This is in a 25" Krieger. I stopped at 88.5 because the first node looked so good. It was coming back into the next one but it was going to end up hotter than I want. I didnt hit pressure, but I know it was not far off. By the way the velocity climbed smoothly, and the way the ladder formed, this combo has good potential to be consistently accurate. The 5 shot cluster was 1.2". I will run N570 next.

I also have data on the 230 Berger. This was in a 28" Krieger. A little heavier platform, more like 13lb with optics and bipod. I played with this one last year. This 600 yd pressure ladder did hold up. It is the ideal shaped ladder though. That 85 grain load was extremely accurate up until I pull off the barrel. I think the 230 is probably the ideal bullet in this case, but there is a little jump in recoil.

I will update this thread as I do more testing. I have guys shooting 245s, 250 Atips, and different powders as well. I will get as much of the data up as I can.

Been waiting for this to show up.
I bought a rifle that is chambered 35˚ Improved by you @Alex Wheeler .
Barrel is Kreiger with Terminator brake finished at 28".
I got 800 Berger 215 Hybrids in the deal and also have 230 Berger OTM on hand.
I want to work with Retumbo and Reloder 33 but do have some H1000 if needed.

H1000 has been great for accuracy, but its not going to get the most speed. N570 is tough to get, I may run it up with RL33 also. I have found RL33 to be very temp stable in my 338. I mean extremely good, in the cooler weather at least.

I'm still waiting on the correct Forster Quick Change Jaws for my CoAx and a couple of bushings for the Hornady Custom dies that came with it.
Won't be able to do anything with the fire formed brass until then. The rifle had six rounds on it when I got it and I fired the other 14 (all factory 300NM ammo). Berger listed it at 3,017 FPR but I was in the high 2,800 range. Surely because it was a new barrel and it will speed up.

I don't have any pictures to load right now, but i have lots of info. All 26" Broughton barrel 5C. Lapua brass is great. I did some prelim testing on ADG brass, it's same volume and equal it quality and almost all measurements. Peterson brass is also up there in quality, but headspace is very short (.009") shorter than Lapua. ADG and Lapua are withiin .002" on headspace.

Fire form load for 215's and H100- 85 grains jammed .020. 230 Bergers 83 grains H1000 Jammed .020

215 Bergers. With H1000, these shoot best around 3100-3125 with about 88 grains. CCI 250 primers. .020" off the lands. I ran them up to 3210 before i got a bolt click. N570 also works very well, 91-91.5 grains for 3150ish. Didn't do much testing with Retumbo and 215's. But Retumbo loads are usually 1-1.5 grains more with an additional 40-50 FPS gain.

230 Bergers. With H1000, 85-86 grains for 2950-3000 FPS .020" off shoots best. Retumbo shot about the same, but has a higher node around 3070 88-89. N570 has shot well at 3030-3050 88ish grains.

245 Bergers. N570 is the only powder i have used for these bullets. 88.5 grains gets me 3000FPS and has been pretty consistent. I will say, there is a big recoil jump between the 245's and 230's. I recently changed brakes on my rifle so i will have to circle back around and do some fine tuning.

I spent my first barrel testing quite a few different combo's. I will say that with H1000, Retumbo, it's best to run the 230's at 2950-3000 and call it a day. If you want that extra speed, you will want N570. Back order it and you should be able to get some when you place your rifle on order. Kreiger barrels seem to run a little tighter. If you have one, back down a few grains. I have had much better luck with CCI250's than Fed 215's for my combos.

Shot 90.5, 91, and 91.5 yesterday at 1k. 91 and 91.5 overlapped and looked good so I took 91.5 back to 1k this morning and shot 15, 20, and 25 jump. 15 was about 6" wide, 20 just over 4" and 25 was 2.5". These are 215s running 3110 fps in my light weight rifle with 25" barrel. This is the 3rd time out in a row 91.5 has repeated, the barrel has about 60 rounds on it now and the velocity is stable already.

We'll find out how those 250 Atips hold up at the 2000yd match next weekend. They look like they are trying to shoot tiny.

How would a 30 degree shoulder compare to the 35? I ask because I have one I'm waiting to get finished up (bought the chambered barrel and action from someone).

Just a little less case capacity. Lots of rounds have 30 degree shoulders and are very accurate. It wouldn’t bother me.

Will there be any shooting this in at Raton this year. I’ll be watching in anticipation.
Most of these have been built more along the lines of hunting rifles. But I have done a few in heavy BR/ELR type platforms. I do not know if anyone will be heading to Raton, I know one will be at the 2k match in Townsend MT this weekend. I like that one because the groups are measured and scored on NRA high power targets. Most will be using a .338 for that match though. We have only been shooting groups at 2k for a few years, so there is a lot to learn and its been a lot of fun.
