300 BLK Problems and testing

For subsonic loads it can get frustrating finding something that works well but it is possible with some work.

Lil'Gun is a great powder in a few of my guns but some do not seem to do well with it. I have settled on IMR 4227 for most of my semi auto stuff now. My AR is an 8.5" Rainier Arms 8.5 twist barrel. It has pistol gas with a .113" gas port. I have not tried any of the Shooter's World or CFE Black so I cannot comment. I had miserable luck with A1680.

For my single shots I use a few different powders, still trying to figure out which I like the best. Those powders are Red Dot, VV N105 and Trail Boss. Trail Boss can be compressed and it works just fine. I use it to launch a 265g bullet.

Depending on the gun VV N105 will cycle and lock back with subsonic loads.

Oh, an one more thing. If accuracy is the top priority don't use a mixed lot of brass. Lake City is cheap and plentiful but will drive you insane trying to get a consistent load with it. Even sorting will not help. Buy quality brass like any other caliber you want to shoot well.

I was working on some loads the other day. Normally I use the same brass but decided to use LC brass. I sorted through the pile to find the same year of manufacturer thinking it would be fine. I would have decent SD numbers then get one that was WAY out of the norm. I marked the brass and was able to duplicate it over and over again. And these were all the same year but the head stamps looked slightly different.

I have been using LC brass for plinking inside of 50 yards only for some time. I thought I could sort through the LC and get decent results but they are still not consistent enough for serious accuracy. For long distance accuracy I use the same brass and it is a lot easier to get both supersonic and subsonic loads to shoot well.

Personally I believe this is why it got the reputation for not being accurate. Everyone was using surplus Lake City brass from all different years and expecting match grade accuracy.
