300 blackout vs ar15

I am going to build a "black gun" and I'm trying to decided between a 300 blackout and a AR-15? Any thoughts on pros and con's of both would be great.

Define the role the rifle will play. Then decide on the caliber.

Home defense....300 Blackout is a good choice.

For everything else....223

300 blackout is built on a ar 15 platform. The blackout cost more to shoot than the 223cal. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

I shot a 300 blackout with a suppressor using 240gr Sierra MKs at 800 fps. When you shot it, all you could hear was the sound of the metal on the upper moving, and then that big ol bullet crashing into the target. No report from the barrel at all!
Really cool 8)

Wouldn't that be about like a really good slingshot? ;)

No...not really. That 200+ grain bullet will kill you graveyard dead. A slingshot will just piss you off. :)

+1. I was skeptical to it's effectiveness until I started shooting stuff with it. A 240gr bullet can do some serious damage at those speeds. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer through thick brush at 100 yards with that gun.

I have a 16 inch blackout now but moving to a 8 inch one as I shoot it just for the grins of subsonic ammo in a can. I have never even loaded a single round of full power ammo for the blackout yet but I have the bullets sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
If I wanted to hunt something I would use the 6.5 grendel. For target shooting my 556 gun comes out to play as it is what I use the most and am most familiar with. But for when you want to go and make a range go quiet as everyone looks to see what the hell your shooting then break out the blackout.

+1 to Minesweeper3433. I run 125 gr. Sierras for full house loads and 208 A-max when I need to be quiet. My only problem is I'm on the BATFE clock right now. Might have it by Christmas!!

Yeah I just checked into suppressor permit and was told that the paperwork only takes 2 weeks once it gets processed, but the line is so long with applications that it takes about 8 months to get to somebody who can do it

I'm also hearing that the electronic process is getting the line shorter faster as well as ATF was told to quit screwing around, because they were losing to much potential revenue.

I really dig my 30 Major AR.

I shoot the 125 gr Speer TNT at 2600 FPS. Terminal performance is impressive.

It's light and handy. When I get back to rifle hunting for deer in KY and TN, it will be the ultimate treestand rifle.

Mike tells me that the 125 gr ballistic tip works, great for deer at that velocity. I haven't tried it, but will.

Unless you already have a 30cal suppressor build a 223/556 AR15 first, after it's up and running start the process of getting a suppressor and build a 300 upper for your lower.
