300 Below Cryogenics

Does anyone here have any firsthand knowledge of this company 300 Below Cryogenics? I have had barrels Cryo treated before through my smith, but he is no longer with us. So, I know little about companies that do this.

So far 4 barrels done by 300 below. ABSOLUTELY Top Notch group. Dick MAyberry is the guy I talk to and hear from him on a frequent basis. have had 2 Tubb T2K barrels done and a Douglas barrel for a Ruger (308) and ??? anyway, turnaround is quick & painless. Highly approve of their work & customer service. Further info available via PM.

What do they charge per barrel and how long do they hold at 300 below. That is if you know his normal procedure. Thanks in advance.

Butch, I don't know. Back when "Cryo" treating was all the rage, I used Kathy because they were members of the BR community and the service was exceptional. If they got your barrel by Friday, they would ship it back on Monday. I never had one done for myself as I wasn't convinced that my $49.00 wouldn't be better spent on primers and powder.

I agree with that! The price of a barrel nowadays, with no guarantee of anything, kinda hard to throw another 50 bucks out the window.

I have used this firm. http://metal-wear.com/index.html I believe they go to -450 deg. I have not shot one of them yet, but I can tell you that you can tell the difference chambering a barrel. Will it shoot better, I don't know.

I've used 300 below cyrogenics in the past on a win model 70 308win heavy varmint model. It started throwing shots after a couple rounds in a string of prone rapid fire. Had this firm do the action and barrel and the pattern throughout the 10-20 rounds fired stayed consistently as small as if I had fired a 3 shot string. I would recommend them. Fast turn around time. Just make sure the barrel is totally clean before sending it in. Don't send the bolt in- only action and barrel. Remove the scope mounts/iron sights in advance and clean up the loctite residue.

They are the one's who invented Cryo, they do it right.
They also do military right upto and including tank barrels.
They do their runs on Fridays, get your barrel there by thursday, You will have it back by the following Wed.
Great service and fantastic work.
I have had 2 barrels done by them and the stringing stopped, no scratches or marks, the best out there.

You will not be throwing your money away with 300 Below. Especially if you are working with a factory barrel. I don't think a custom barrel will improve since they already stress relieve several times in the process of making theirs. I have treated two barrels - Ruger Target and a Win. stainless factory sporter. Both showed fairly dramatic decreases in group size and better consistency.

dksac2, you may want to check out the history of "Cryogenics" before making claims about the inventor.

Don't know if they still do but Krieger has/had a cryo treatment right in their plant. For service rifles, their bbls were cryo treated when you got them.

There were several articles in Precision Shooting many years ago when the process surfaced. Several bbls that were not shooting up to expectation were treated and they improved their grouping ability.

Am not sure what the effect would be on a really straight, stress free bbl would be. You can do a google on the PS articles.

The process is used in the machine tools world to make tooling last longer and material machine easier. Our little shop sent end mills out for treatment. They cut smoother and lasted longer after the treatment.
