.30 question.

If my barrel is a 1-10 twist. What is the lightest bullet I could shoot accurately? I like the idea about 30 br but could I shoot it well, or would the bullets be too heavy for that round? I want something that takes less powder than a 308 but still want to be accurate out to 300 yards or so.What chamber should I go with?

.30T/C or .300 Savage would be fun rounds. A .30 Dasher would be neat as well, if there is enough neck to be possible, and that I don't know.

I have a .300 Savage in a Savage model 99 lever gun. Very fun rifle and a really good round. It's basically .308 that has been slightly shortened with an improved shoulder angle. It does hold a bit less powder but still has good ballistic capabilities. I believe it is similar to what a .30X47 would be, not real sure though.

The .30T/C is similar to the .300 Savage, and is an accurate round as well. May be worth looking into, especially now that Hodgedon has released the Superformance powders. It is capable of matching 150gr 30-06 velocities with factory ammo, while using less powder and having less recoil than even a .308, but this is with factory ammo. You will likely need Superformance powder to approach this level of performance, at least according to all I have read.

As for lightest bullet in the 1-10 twist, I have been able to achieve rather good accuracy from 110gr Sierra HP Varminter bullets in my .308, though it took a bit to find the right powder and load combo and it wasn't until the barrel was well broken in that they shot on par with heavier bullets (It's a Savage and they tend to need 150-250 rounds to really reach peak accuracy in most cases). It also does very well with 125gr Nosler ballistic tips. So the 1-10 is capable of accuracy with light bullets, though as with anything, it will depend on the preference of the barrel in question.

Why not a .300 savage improved, then brass would be cheap for hunting that is.The .300 savage is an amazing cartridge and inherently accurate to start with. The only reason it isnt real popular today is the .308 was marketed heavily to stomp this one out of existence.
