30 br twist

For the 110-125 grain bullets, I’ve seen the br guys run the 1-15” to 1-18” twist. According to Begers website, these bullets are
“marginally stable”. We’re looking for the best groups obviously and out as far as we can. We’ve tested these bullets in a 1-10” and 1-12” and getting decent results. I know they are using the 1-17” twist for BR and such, I am really just looking for first hand knowledge.

How did you determine shooting 110-125gr bullets are marginally stable in 1-15 - 1-18 twist barrels? Generally - 30BRs shoot FB bullets? :

That's incorrect. Are you using the Flat Based stability calculator?

You can also go to the JBM Ballistics site, input your numbers and get the stability number.

That’s the info I needed before I pull the trigger on a slow twist. I appreciate your responses!

You caught my attention with 30BR. A few friends and I hunt with 300HAM’R using 1:15 twist barrels. We have no problems shooting 100gr-135gr (flat based) without any stability issues. We have run a variety of different bullets in this weight class manufactured by Barnes, Lehigh Defense, Speers, Sierra, and Hornady. Sorry - no hands on with this specific Berger … to fancy for shooting pigs.

From my experience with B R & Hunter 30BRs I like the 1 - 15 Tw. better for bullets weighing over 118 gr. I shoot the 125 gr. Nosler A B from a 23 inch barrel on a Model 7 Hunter @ 3000 + FPS with great accuracy. 1/4 inch groups at 100 yds. is very common. I have seen no issues with my rifle and bullet stability.

Barnes TAC-TX was designed specifically for 300BO. Barnes elongated the bullet (basically a triangle with no ogre) in order to reduce the excessive jump/gap of 300BO chamber. Chamber was designed to handle 220gr SMK for subsonic ammo. Also, this bullet designed to fully expand at the much slower velocity of 309BO (down to 1800 fps).

Barnes TSX & TTSX are designed with normal profile/ogee, better suited for majority .30 cal cartridges

My dad built another 30BR some years ago after he sold his first one to me. He built the new one with a 1:12" twist because he wanted to shoot some of the bullets that were 125-135grs with it. The problem he had was he just couldn't get enough velocity out of them to make them work well at 200yds. He then switched back to the Berger 115's and even though that barrel should be way too quick of a twist, he kicks the hell out of us at 200yds with it.

I chambered a 17tw 3 groove Lilja with my zero freebore reamer for a short barrel hunting 30BR. If there’s one thing I’d do differently, it would be to add about .06” freebore.
